Dubai-Canada trade grows 61% to AED2bn in Q1 2014












H.E. Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), discussed future prospects of cooperation between PCFC and the Canadian government with Ed Fast, the Canadian Minister of International Trade. The discussion took place during the meeting that was held in Vancouver- Canada, as part of the current official visit by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Canada. H.E. Sultan Bin Sulayem spoke with the Canadian Minister about the role of DP World in supporting the performance of Vancouver Port by managing a major container terminal at the port, which is considered a main gate for trade between markets in Canada, Asia and the Indian Ocean. HE Bin Sulayem, Chairman of PCFC, said, "We endeavour at PCFC to nurture strong business relations between DP World and Canada in terms of seaports management, based on the fruitful results already achieved by their joint cooperation which is to be further reinforced in the near future." He stressed that PCFC is committed to support the economic ties between the UAE and Canada, as reflected by their growing bilateral trade that surged 53% in 2013 to Dhs9.2 billion compared to Dhs6 billion in 2012. As well, Dubai foreign trade with Canada scored a 61% growth in Q1 2014 valued at Dhs2 billion compared with Dhs1.3 billion for the same period in 2013. The Canadian Foreign Trade Minister hailed DP World’s contribution to the development of Canadian ports services, through its exceptional management of a containers terminal at Vancouver Port. He also stressed strengthening ties of cooperation in this area in order to benefit from the vast experience of DP World in running a large network of ports around the globe. DP World-Vancouver terminal is located in the inner harbour of downtown Vancouver, and is a key gateway port for the Trans-Pacific Trades between Asia and the Pacific North West. In addition to serving the local market for British Columbia, DP World Vancouver provides direct daily intermodal rail connection to the important markets of Eastern Canada and the US Mid West, covered by both Canadian Pacific (CP) and Canada National (CN) railway. DP World Vancouver continues to be a leader in the application of advanced technology with GPS tracked RTG along with Optical Character Readers (OCR) being introduced at the truck gate, rail gate and gantry quay cranes. In 2007, DP World Vancouver was the first container terminal in North America to be certified to ISO/PAS 28000, the highest independent security certification, and is an accredited member of C-TPAT. The visit also included a meeting with a number of business leaders in Vancouver, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed. Sultan bin Sulayem presented the UAE’s investment potentials backed by a conducive legal infrastructure. He emphasized the advanced services offered in seaports and airports and the overall country’s infrastructure that fulfills the highest global standards.
