How to protect your online privacy and freedom in Dubai

There’s a movement developing all across the globe, where millions of users are choosing to join the “cord-cutters” club -- opting to get all their media entertainment online through wireless means.

From Spotify to Netflix and every streaming service in between, online users all over the world are figuring out various methods and approaches to get their favourite online streaming services seamlessly from wherever they may be located in the world at any one time.

This movement is showing no signs of slowing down, and may very well be the future of how the next generation ingests media entertainment regularly.

Where this approach to streaming media becomes all the more useful (and thus prevalent) is in countries where popular on-demand streaming services like Netflix and Hulu are actually geo-restricted to the users based therein.

Unfortunately for web users located in the UAE, Netflix is one such service that is heavily “watered down” in Dubai. Although available as a service, the Netflix library offered to users in Dubai is nowhere near as comprehensive and all-encompassing as the library presented to, for example, users located within the United States.

Having services restricted and filtered down due to your location is frustrating enough as a user within the UAE. However, much more serious matter is the ever-growing surveillance of online behaviour by many of the world’s national governments.

When it comes to your personal right to privacy, I think we’re all in agreement that lately our governments have been peering over our shoulders a little too closely.

The UAE is no exception in this respect, sadly. So taking control of your online activity as best you can really is a must these days. But how can you do this most effectively, and without getting super “technical” with your devices?

The Best Solution

To get right to the most easy-to-setup and affordable solution, you should consider getting a Virtual Private Network installed onto any and all devices you use to browse the web through. This software, known as a “VPN”, is a simple yet powerful way to take control of encrypting your online data so that “prying eyes” cannot access and record it any way they wish.

VPNs use sophisticated encryptions methods known as protocols that essentially render your online activity unreadable by anyone, as soon as it happens. The great secondary effect of how VPNs work is that you use them by connecting to any of the many server locations offered by any one VPN provider, most of which provide locations all over the world. And once are successfully connected to a location (like connecting to a US-based server from your Dubai location), you will have instantly changed you IP address -- resulting in all websites and online services “seeing” your location as within the US, rather than your actual location, Dubai.

Why Does this help my Online Freedom?

The reason using a VPN allows you to take back control of your online freedom is because it allows you to change your IP address, which allows you access to the full US versions (i.e. the best versions) of many on-demand online media services like Hulu, Netflix and Spotify from your UAE-based location, with very little effort and cost.

So by spending 2 minutes choosing the best VPN provider for your budget and needs, then installing it onto the devices you want to access geo-restricted online content through, you will have given yourself a quick way to gain access to such content instantly from the comfort of your Dubai location.
