Women’s Sports Committee Reveals Plans For 2018-19 Season

The Women's Sports Committee of Dubai Sports Council have announced their calendar of events for 2018-19, which includes some of country's biggest ladies-only events like the Dubai Women's Triathlon and the Sheikha Hind Women's Sports Tournament.

The list, which was adopted at a recent meeting of the Women's Sports Committee at DSC, includes nine events that range from sports tournaments to workshops and community events.

"The goal of the Women's Sports Committee is to reach women of all ages and nationalities, and get them involved in some form of physical activity," said Fawzia Faridoun, a member of the Women's Sports Committee. "And we plan our events with that singular purpose in mind.

"Over the past years, we have managed to attract a huge number of women from different backgrounds – from schoolgirls to housewives and career professionals – to participate in our events, thereby increasing the pool of athletes available for our sports clubs and national teams.

"We have certainly been encouraged by that and now we are looking to step up this season, and work even harder to increase women's participation in sport. Our vision at Dubai Sports Council is to build a distinguished sports community, where men and women from every section of the society have equal opportunities to practise sport and adopt a physically active lifestyle, because such a lifestyle is key to maintaining your health and happiness."

The agenda of the Women's Sports Committee for 2018-19 also includes organising a number of developmental programmes like the "Future Trainer Programme", which was held earlier this season. The first such programme of its kind in the UAE, the "Future Trainer Programme" aims to help train players from Dubai clubs to become coaches in the future and "carry the torch to the next generation", as per Fardioun.

The Committee is also organising a free-of-charge Sports Camp for girls this summer at the Swiss International Scientific School in Al Jaddaf. The 25-day camp, which is open to girls of all nationalities aged 7 to 12, will run from July 22 to August 15.

There will be a number of individual and team sports on offer at the camp, including rugby, basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, golf, table tennis and running. There will be many other activities available at the camp, like ultimate frisbee, zumba, dodgeball, yoga, rock climbing, nutrition, movie time and teamwork.

The Committee has also drawn up plans to celebrate the fourth Emirati Women's Day on August 28. Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, launched the Emirati Women's Day in 2015 to recognise the contribution of Emirati women in developing and advancing the country.

The Sheikha Hind Women's Sports Tournament, being held for the sixth year, will then start in October, while the second Dubai Women's Triathlon is scheduled for November 9, with Dubai Ladies Club again playing host to an event which is one of its kind the Middle East.
