The Festival, since its first edition held in 2007 has evolved into a highly anticipated event which, while bringing the best in Arab and international film and talent to Abu Dhabi, has also remained dedicated to fostering and showcasing the creative genius of those working and creating in UAE and in all the Gulf Countries.

With its program ADFF promotes appreciation and understanding of the art of cinema amongst its enthusiastic multicultural audiences and contributes to Abu Dhabi being positioned as an internationally recognized creative hub for cinema, arts and culture.

In 2013, ADFF received over 2,000 submissions from 102 countries and presented 90 long feature films and 70 short films from 51 countries.

Algerian director Merzak Allouache was presented with several awards during ADFF 2013; Allouache won Best Director from the Arab World, the Variety Middle East Filmmaker of the Year Award and the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) award for his film The Rooftops (Algeria). SANAD funded film My Sweet Pepperland (Iraq) was also screened at Cannes and went on to win the Special Jury Award at ADFF 2013.

Ali Al Jabri, ADFF Director, commented: "When ADFF started, the aim was always to showcase the best films from around the world with films from the region, I’m proud to say that ADFF is still the only festival in the region to have Arab cinema compete alongside international film. We will continue to showcase the best of world cinema by bringing together another thrilling programme for ADFF 2014".
