Conservation Teaches Children Environmental Consciousness

Children attending the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival were taught about the importance of energy conservation through a play titled “Conservation.”

The musical play was put on stage by the Family Theater Group and is a joint production between the Sharjah’s Supreme Council for Family Affair (SCFA)’s Cultural and Media Office and the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority and is under the patronage of the SCRF. The play, written by Emirati poet Salha Ghabish starts out by a father telling his children that they should read a book. The children object but agree to read the book because their father tells them that they’ll find a treasure inside the book.

The pages of the book then reveal that people are wasting water, electricity and gas… the hero of the book aptly named “Conservation” then explains to them that their daily habits contribute to the waste of these three sources of energy and that they need to change their habits for a better future. “Why do we do insist on doing  things that are harmful like wasting energy?” the characters ask.

“The goal of the family’s theatre group is to educate and raise awareness amongst families and children,” said Khalida Majid, the play’s director and Theatre Activities Supervisor at the SCFA, adding that in this play the focus was caring for the environment. “I’m very happy with the turn out and feedback that we’ve received after our first show,” said Majid, “but the credit doesn’t go to me, it goes to the entire cast and crew that are the basis of every successful production.”

Speaking about the production, Laila Abu Dhikri, Artistic Production Supervisor at the SCFA and the music composer of the play said that in previous years the SCFA has produced other musical plays in partnership with other government organizations such as the Sharjah Educational Authority and the Sharjah Police.

“We try to deliver the message through musical theatre so that it’s presented in a form that is accepted by adults and children alike,” said Abu Dhikri adding that work on this production started nearly six months ago.

“We care about the individual, the one that works with us but also, the one that sees us. If we manage to have a positive effect on the parents or children that watch our shows then our mission is accomplished,” she added.

‘Conservation’ was in collaboration with the Al Salam Kindergarten and Al Shula School.
