In Support Of UAE Water Aid AED 2.5 Million Donated By du To Provide Clean Water For 100,000 People In Developing Country

In the spirit of the Holy Month and inspired by the generosity and philanthropic approach of the UAE leadership, du has donated AED 2.5 million to  the UAE Water Aid campaign launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The donation is an extension of du's continuous efforts to drive sustainability within the UAE and beyond. Launched to coincide with and starting on the first day of Ramadan, the UAE Water Aid campaign will provide more than 5 million people worldwide with access to fresh drinking water. du's contributions to UAE Water Aid will help 100,000 people to get access to clean water, as it will be be used in coordination with international organisations, the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) and UAE embassies, to dig wells and provide water pumps to areas that require water purification equipment.

Ahmad bin Byat, Chairman, du, said: "Water is the very essence of life, and is something that we take for granted, while others are less fortunate. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed's UAE Water Aid initiative is a noble cause that will allow us to alleviate the water situation in less fortunate countries, contributing to saving millions of lives around the world by giving them access to clean water. We are proud, as an Emirati company, to support this cause, which will lead to more sustainable communities that have the potential to flourish and grow, echoing the progress of the UAE itself. As His Highness Sheikh Mohammed inspiringly said, 'the UAE was built upon the eternal principle of doing good deeds in the world, and we will continue in the footsteps of the founding fathers who laid this charitable approach'."

Lack of access to clean water and sanitation kills 3.6 million person annually, due to dehydration and diseases carried in unclean water  90%% of these are children under the age of five. Hours are spent by women and children collecting water daily. Providing clean, easily accessible water to communities in need will not only improve mortality rates, but it will give children the opportunity to attend school and women the chance to work for an income, contributing to the overall growth and sustainability of their community.

Osman Sultan, CEO, du, said: "There are many privileges that we enjoy, living in the UAE, which can make it easy to forget that life is more difficult for those less privileged elsewhere in the world. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed has led the way on many visionary initiatives, and we laud him for his continued support of the global community. Civilizations are always found around water, as it nourishes life and connects people. It is therefore natural that telecoms would be among the first to support the campaign, as we build sustainable communications channels to connect people and develop communities. In helping communities beyond the UAE's borders to grow, we are sharing a positive example for our own community to follow - one that is driven by humanitarianism and philanthropic gestures, modelled after the generosity and compassion of the UAE leadership."

Hala Badri, Executive Vice President, Brand and Communications, du, said: "The Holy Month of Ramadan is a time for us to consider the needs of others, and to seek ways in which we can alleviate their suffering. We thank His Highness Sheikh Mohammed for his guidance and for the launch of the UAE Water Aid campaign, which draws attention to the plight of those less fortunate around the world. It is our honour to support this campaign."
