Sharjah’s Department Of Children Centres Develops Children’s Artistic Talents Through Cartoon Flip Book Workshop

The series of artistic workshops for children – which will be held till next November – continues ahead of preparation for the fourth edition of the Sharjah Children's Biennale organised by the Department of Children Centres in Sharjah, one of the Supreme Council for Family Affair's departments. The Biennale will be held in collaboration with the Sharjah Museum's Department from December 20, 2014 to February 20, 2015 under the theme ‘Questions’.

The schedule of workshops for the month of September includes 5 workshops: ‘Curious Characters’ conducted by Emirati artist Nasser Nasrallah; ‘Sarb’, conducted by artist Ali Aloush; a painting on ceramics workshop presented by the Ahd Initiative project; a workshop on creating cartoon flip books conducted by Tulip Hazbar; and ‘Colour Your Question’ conducted by Nasrallah for the Children of the Friends of Cancer Patients at the Tawam Hospital in Al Ain.

During the ‘Creating Cartoon Flip Books’ workshop conducted by Tulip Hazbar at the Children's Center in the Mughayder, children were introduced to how to deal with their workspace and how to organise the positioning of the various characters so that their movement flows smoothly when the pages are flipped quickly. This is considered one of the ‘animation’ arts involved in the creation of cartoons that children adore.

Through the workshop, children were able to create their own flip books which they then collated by themselves. The workshop also developed their drawing skills and boosted their creativity as they created stories that fit their moving cartoon characters. Children were also encouraged to ask about various things in their surroundings and to understand what things were made of and how they were made, keeping in line with the theme of the workshop series ‘Questions’.

The workshop on creating cartoon flip books included three parts presented over three days. During the first day, participants learned how to create pictures by using geometrical shapes. In they second day they learnt how to develop their skill by moving from a geometrical shape to a drawing from their own imagination. On the third, and final day, children put together their cartoon flip book. The workshop was filmed to document its various stages and the final books produced by the participating children.

Speaking about this workshop, Noura Mohammed Mubarak, the general coordinator of the Biennale said: “This workshop was organised to develop children's artistic skills through teaching them the basis of creating cartoon flip books to continue what they learned during previous workshops such as the ones on design, visual arts, and dealing with surrounding objects and utilising them in stories from their own imagination. After the end of the workshops we expect to have unique works of art to be put on display during the Sharjah Children's Biennale as well as children that have acquired artistic skills to help them create creative pieces of art in the future.”

Nearly 40 child cancer patients took part in the ‘Colour Your Question’ workshop conducted by Nasser Nasrallah, which was held at the Tawam Hospital in Al Ain on Wednesday September 24th. Children used their favourite colours to create their paintings. These paintings will be used in promoting the events of the Sharjah Children's Biennale and more workshops for child cancer patients will be organised in collaboration with various authorities.

Through the workshops, the Children’s Centres Department in Sharjah aims to support children's skills in creating art pieces that will hopefully be put on display during the fourth edition of the Sharjah Children's Biennale, which will be held from December 20, 2014 to December 20, 2015 in collaboration with the Sharjah Museum's Department. The Department of Children's Centres in Sharjah has made it possible for all children to take part, free of charge, in all the workshops by contacting the department and registering through the website: www.scbiennial.ae.
