Award-Winning Dutch Filmmaker To Share His Expert Technique At Workshop In Dubai

This first of its kind event in Dubai will be held December 6-9, 2014 at International Horizon College’s state-of-the-art campus in Business Bay, Dubai. The daily five-hour sessions will be from 3.00pm-8.00pm. Admitting a maximum of 15 students, the workshop costs AED 1,600. Students can register by emailing info@documentaryvoices.org.

“This is going to be a very exciting workshop,” says Mahshid Zamani, founder of Documentary Voices. “The teaching method will be focussed on ‘learning by doing’ and ‘learning by discussion and conversation’. An important tool will be the ORBIT camera rig, an invention of the professor especially made for the Single-Shot Cinema methodology.”

Single-Shot Cinema is a way of filming that enables one to shoot a scene in one single take using just one camera moving fluidly around the subject recording all the camera angles that express one’s personal feeling and perception of that moment. Helmrich is famous for perfecting the ‘Single-Camera Shot’.

“Single-Shot Cinema is a film method that re‐interprets film language based on the technical developments and possibilities of filmmaking in the digital age. What was once only possible with cranes and Steadicam is now accessible to any filmmaker. Students will discover how to intuitively capture actions in a scene and how to choreograph one single shot, using smooth and flexible camera movements that press the drama, emotion and vision of the director,” says Helmrich.

The ‘Single-Shot Cinema workshop is supported by the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), the leading film festival of the region. International Horizons College (IHC) is Documentary Voices’ education partner.

“We are proud to partner with Documentary Voices who are bringing this amazing workshop to Dubai. As a premier liberal arts college, International Horizons College is always supportive of promoting all forms of art in our community. Budding filmmakers and students of arts will benefit greatly by attending this workshop,” says Dr. Christopher Hall, President of International Horizons College.

The following subjects will be discussed during the ‘Single-Shot Cinema’ workshop: history of film, significant authors concerning camera movement, holistic approach during filmmaking, objective and subjective reality, means of expression, differences and similarities between ‘point of view’ and ‘point of you’, development of ‘Single-Shot Cinema’, using orbits as an essential part of SSC, emotional point of view and narrative function of camera movements, inter-relationship during filming, collective shot by multiple operators and the camera choreography.

The workshop aims to:

* Develop a strong grasp of visual film language, especially as it pertains to camera movements and long shots.

* Strengthen visual storytelling skills. Learn to integrate emotion, story, drama and composition into single shot.

* Teach how to block action and utilise natural light during a film shoot.

* Study and practice the art of editing, learn to consider tempo, movement and emotion when cutting.

* Collaborate on film exercises with the professor and fellow classmates.

The students will also get a chance make a short single shot film that will be presented on the last day.

Leonard Retel Helmrich shoots as well as directs all his own films. He graduated from the Dutch Film and Television Academy in 1986 and in 1990 he made his first feature film, ‘The Phoenix Mystery’. His films have screened and won acclaim at film festivals worldwide, garnering major awards for both his drama and documentary work. He was the first person to twice win IDFA’s top prize, for his films ‘Position Among the Stars’ and ‘The Shape of the Moon’, part of his trilogy on modern Indonesia. In 2013, Helmrich was named as Scheddield Inspiration Award winner among 21 inspirational people from the documentary industry as part of its 21st festival. He has also served on the jury of many film festivals.
