Sharjah Water Festival Opens Today

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Water Festival 2014 opens today (Wednesday, December 17) at 6 pm at Al Majaz Waterfront and Khalid Lagoon. Hosted by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, the eighth year of the Sharjah Water Festival will run until December 20th (5pm until 10pm) and once again promises lots of fun and excitement. This year once again there are a host of international acts from across the globe stretching from Australia to Poland.

The scenic Khalid Lagoon will be the centre of action as it sees some 16 water sports enthusiasts flex their muscles with never before seen thrilling feats. They will rip through the water and rocket through the air on jet skis, kiteboards, flyboards and speedboats.

Al Majaz Waterfront, on the other hand, will host family fun and wholesome entertainment with events and activities. The amazing sand sculptures are again a new attraction this year and has been constructed by the famous sand artist Jenny Rossen from Australia. Her sculpting team includes International artists who use their amazing talents and skills to build enormous sand sculptures while involving children and visitors in the fun. This year the children are invited to join workshops under supervision and will be able to post their pictures onto social media via #SWF Instagram @shjtourism and Twitter @sharjahtourism. There are prizes every night for the best sculpture.

Al Majaz Waterfront, the main venue, will also feature a beautiful Heritage Village. Divided into three sections, the Heritage Village will help you discover the rich heritage of the UAE and explore with your children the popular culture, customs and traditions of the ancestors. The three sections include Heritage Majlis, Modern Age and Get a Taste of It.

As always, there will be the Mouj Carnival with Roaming Musicians, jugglers, stilt walkers, jumpers and acrobats all coming together to entertain the visitors and spread joy and laughter, especially among the thousands of young children who eagerly await an opportunity to cuddle with their beloved friend Mouj, the popular Water Festival mascot. There will be plenty of photo opportunities with Mouj.

Meanwhile the Khalid Lagoon will come alive with the action of the grand finale of the UIM H20 Formula One World Powerboat Championship being held on December 18 and 19.

The Sharjah Water Festival was formally announced by the SCTDA at a press conference on December
