Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) Takes Part In Paris International Book Fair And Celebrates Brazilian Culture

Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) is taking part in Paris International Book Fair, which was launched last Friday at Porte De Versailles in Paris. The book fair, which will last until March 23, is celebrating Brazil as a guest of honor, hosting around 40 poets and novelists and 50 publishers from the country.

The authority is organizing free workshops for the book fair visitors, led by Sudanese artist Islam Zein Al Abedeen, who was selected to take part in the fourth edition of Sharjah Exhibition for Children Books’ Illustrations this April. The workshops will shed light on the Arabic calligraphy heritage, with English and French translations.

Knowledge Without Borders, the Sharjah-based cultural project, was also be present at the fair, occupying a special corner in the Authority's pavilion. The General Manager of Knowledge Without Borders Rashid Al Kous introduced the project's vision and initiatives, highlighting its role in bringing the culture of reading to every Emirati household.

HE Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman of SBA said, "These workshops come in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhamad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in elevating the creative side of humanity and building a platform for communication between all nations in the world. Our goal is to introduce artists who were instrumental to our Sharjah Exhibition for Children Books’ Illustrations, as well as highlighting SBA's activities in the creative realm, and emphasizing the role played by the UAE on the international cultural scene.

Al Ameri also highlighted the importance of communicating with publishers and cultural figures in the various publishing events around the world, in order to explore collaboration opportunities in SBA's flagship events Sharjah International Book Fair, Sharjah Children Reading Festival, Sharjah Exhibition for Children Books’ Illustrations, Publishers Professional Program, and the joint projects with the American Library Association. Al Ameri added that having Brazil as a guest of honor is an opportunity to meet tens of Brazilian publishers and authors, including the world famous author Paulo Coelho.

SBA's pavilion at Paris Book Fair welcomed France President, François Hollande, during which he received a French copy from His Highness’ book “Taking the Reins” (Hadeeth Al Thakira).

SBA took advantage of this opportunity to highlight the Sharjah International Book Fair Translation Grant, an initiative launched in 2011 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of SIBF, with the goal of enhancing cultural exchange and supporting copyright. The delegation also invited participating publishers and French publishers in particular to participate at Sharjah International Book Fair and other events organized by SBA.

The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) was established in December 2014 through an Emiri decree issued by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

It is tasked with encouraging investment in creative industries and providing a platform for knowledge and intellectual exchange among people from different countries and cultures.

The SBA also aims to develop the printing and publishing sector and support the significant role of writers and their influence in spreading awareness of technological advancements and the availability of various sources of information. The authority assumes the responsibility of enhancing the Emirate’s status on the regional and international level to attract relevant bodies and figures operating in the cultural sector in general, and the publishing, printing, translation, documentation and children’s book sector in particular.
