Sharjah Fort Hosts Family Workshops To Celebrate IMD

Sharjah Fort, the emirate’s most important historic building, has organised a series of family workshops on sustainability to celebrate Sharjah Museums Department’s participation in International Museum Day.

The workshops started last weekend, with the next series scheduled to run between May 28thand May 30th.

International Museum Day is a global annual event, established in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society and to open the door for further community involvement.

Every year a theme is selected by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), and IMD 2015, held on 18thMay, was based around ‘Museums for a Sustainable Society’. With this in mind, Sharjah Museums Department has organised multiple workshops at its newly re-opened Al Hisn Fort – an iconic heritage landmark at the heart of Sharjah that recently re-opened after a sustainable restoration and reinterpretation project lasting 15 months.

The second round of interactive workshops will run on Thursday 28thMay, Friday 29thMay and Saturday 30thMay and offer the opportunity for all members of the family to come together and enjoy an enriching yet fun weekend. Entitled ‘Pearl Bracelets’, ‘Salt Powered Robot’, and ‘Re-use Everyday Objects’, the workshops are collaborative programmes devised and delivered by several museums within SMD, all focusing on the concept of sustainability in various forms, from recycling and reducing waste to preserving museum collections.

For children, there will be workshops that teach them how to decorate objects, how to document and record museum artefacts in order to safely curate them, and how to restore pottery objects.

While at Sharjah Fort, visitors will also be invited to take a guided tour that will afford them a unique opportunity to experience the history that has shaped the emirate and its people and will further foster an appreciation of preserving historic and heritage sites for a sustainable society.
