1971 Design Space Presents TEST BED ’71


A Closer Look At The Creative Process Behind The Making Of An Exhibition










Since its inauguration in 2015, 1971- Design Space, part of Maraya Art Centre, has become a significant platform for designers in the region offering an opportunity for experimentation, innovation, prototyping and design research and development. From 3-5 October 2016, 1971 Design Space is hosting TEST BED '71 inviting audiences for the first time to a behind the scenes look at the process of building and curating the exhibition.

The installation process, often private and precedent to exhibition openings, is converted to a public event through this interactive experience, with the aim of engaging and educating audiences about the process of building and curating an exhibition. Topics include building large installations and the ergonomics of hanging artwork on the wall and in relation to other pieces. This is the first time 1971 - Design Space 1971 unveils the behind the scenes process to the public.

TEST BED 71 enables design enthusiast, students, and professionals who are interested in the creation of art and design exhibitions to more fully experience the process that goes into the successful display of contemporary works.  It's a behind-the-scenes snapshot that's the first of its kind in the region and participants will come away with a significant amount of insight into how to conceptualize and deliver a compelling arrangement of art or design' said Giuseppe Moscatello, Director of Maraya Art Centre and 1971 - Design Space.

Mouza Al Matrooshi, Exhibition Coordinator at 1971 – Design Space commented These guided tours will allow thoes who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of creating exhibitions to be more involved in the process of planning and producing one. TEST BED '71 allows partakers to interact with the different processes that are employed in displaying the works'  Al Matrooshi, who worked on planning and putting together this exhibition, will be conducting the tours and giving visitors more insights on what goes into creating an exhibition.

Presenting a variety of design disciplines including architecture, furniture, product design & graphic design, Test Bed '˜71 will display a collection from past exhibitions that have been showcased at 1971 including: Zero, Garden After, DE.FASH.STRUCTION., and Once Upon Design. The exhibition will also survey the variety of experiment-driven approaches and thinking processes by designers throughout the different exhibitions held since 1971- Design Space's inception. 

The guided tours are open to the public from October 3-5, 2016 from 7-8pm daily. The themes include 'Creating the Exhibition Layout' (October 3)'Building Large Installations (October 4, 2016), 'Hanging Artworks and The Final Touches (October 5).
