ICM Chooses Abu Dhabi To Host Its 33rd Triennial Congress In 2023

The International Confederation of Midwives, ICM, has selected Abu Dhabi to host its 33rd Triennial Congress in 2023. The emirate was selected in the face of stiff competition from both Chile and Germany.

The Midwifery Society of the Emirates Nursing Association was supported in its bid by key stakeholders, including the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau, and the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, ADNEC.

Commenting on the ICM decision, Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director-General of The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said, "The healthcare sector has been clearly identified as a key sector in the Government of Abu Dhabi’s drive for economic diversification and excellence. The emirate’s healthcare credentials are excellent, so the contribution of hosting these specialised international meetings is a significant factor in our wider tourism growth strategy to expand the business events and MICE sector by 5%-7% per annum.

"Our collaborative approach to multi-partner delivery, coupled with the country’s long-standing reputation as a safe destination with the ability to stage global events of this nature have resonated well with the International Confederation of Midwives, and we are delighted they have chosen us for their 33rd triennial congress."

In addition to the support of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and ADNEC, the bid was endorsed by several key organisations from the UAE and the region including the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), the UAE Nursing and Midwifery Council, Emirates Obstetrics/Gynecology Society and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Humaid Al Dhaheri, Group Chief Executive Officer of ADNEC, said, "ADNEC is very proud of the partnership we have developed with the Emirates Nursing Association to secure the world’s largest congress in the field of midwifery and nursing for Abu Dhabi in 2023. Hosting congresses that are aligned with the objectives of Abu Dhabi Plan and the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 is integral to the venue’s strategy and this win confirms the importance of our proactive approach to this important market."

Aysha Al Mahri, the President of the Emirates Nursing Association, said, "ENA’s Midwifery Society has done an exceptional job in securing this meeting for the UAE after several years of hard work led by Noreen Healy the previous Chair of the Society and most recently by Avon Strahle and Khadija Al Sulaimi, the first Emirati midwife to represent the UAE at the ICM’s Council.

"There is a great need for more midwives in the UAE and we believe hosting this congress will help us highlight the importance of this profession both in the UAE and in the wider region. This congress also supports the efforts of the UAE Government in improving the overall health of women, a domain where midwives play a crucial role."

ICM supports, represents and works to strengthen professional associations of midwives throughout the world. There are currently 132 Midwives Associations, representing 113 countries across every continent representing more than 500,000 midwives globally.

Previous ICM Triennial Congress locations included Toronto in 2017 and Prague in 2014, while the next congress is set to take place in Bali, Indonesia in 2020 before heading to Abu Dhabi in 2023.
