Umsiyat Music Series Announced For January











Held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, the Emirates Red Crescent President’s Assistant for Women’s Affairs, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced the Umsiyat programme, a series of outdoor music concerts at Umm Al Emarat Park, which will bring an illustrious mix of artists, genres and nationalities as it celebrates music, 

Presenting three artists across the series, Umsiyat will promote a variety of local, regional and international traditional and modern music in the capital. As part of DCT Abu Dhabi’s efforts to raise awareness about the different genres of music from across the globe while safeguarding local musical heritage, Umsiyat will highlight the importance of this musical genre in our common human heritage. 

The three-night concert series starts with leading Iraqi Maqam singer Farida Mohammad Ali on 8 January 2018. The two-hour performance will comprise of a variety of works by the great Arab poets, Al-Mutanabbi, Baha' al-din Zuhair and Elia Abu Madi, as well as Iraqi poets such as Jabbori Al-Najjar and Abd Al-Karim Al-Allaf. Amongst the Maqam, Farida will also be singing a selection of hits by Iraqi female singers of the 1940s and 1950s including Sadiqah Al-Malaya, Salima Murad and Zohoor Hussain. 

Farida will also be performing renowned songs from the legendary Arab singer Nazem Al-Ghazali, and traditional songs of Basra. The programme’s modern musical section is composed by Muḥammad Ḥusayn Kumar, accompanied by traditional Iraqi instruments.
