Abu Dhabi Festival Continues To Foster Love Of Arabic Literature











Abu Dhabi Festival 2018, ADF18, yesterday launched the 4th edition of the Festival’s annual writing programme, 'Riwaq Al Adab wal Kitab'. Held in association with the Emirates Writers’ Union, this year’s programme realised its ambitious support of 16 new works in collaboration with local publishing houses Dar Nabati, Dar Hamaleel and Dar Madad.

A year-round initiative culminating during the Abu Dhabi Festival’s monumental cultural programme, Riwaq Al Adab wal Kitab seeks to highlight the wealth of local writing talent and develop the UAE literary sector by supporting Emirati authors.

Dr. Habib Al Sayegh, Secretary-General of the Arab Writers Union, Chairman of Emirates Writers’ Union, said, "Collaborations between cultural institutions are essential to establishing the cultural renaissance of the UAE, bringing the creative sector together to better serve the country and its legacy."

"With 16 Emirati writers, the ‘Riwaq Al Adab wal Kitab’ initiative expands and enriches the breadth of its partnership for the fourth consecutive year, strengthening our shared vision by integrating with other leaders in the sector – the Emirates Writers’ Union as well as Emirati publishing houses," he added.

Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, Founder of ADMAF and the Artistic Director of Abu Dhabi Festival, said, "There is nothing more enlightening to a young mind than a well written story. An early introduction to literature can fuel the imagination for a lifetime. It is for that reason that ADMAF is enthusiastically committed to supporting and developing UAE authors. This is the fourth time that we have worked with our strategic partner Emirates Writers’ Union and local publishing houses to realise Riwaq al Adab wal Kitab.

"The programme also exists to nurture the local publishing industry, this year a partnership with Dar Nabati and Dar Hamaleel sees the launch of 16 new books by Emirati authors. The inclusion of special festival events including creative writing and creative reading workshops stand as a testament of our commitment to Arabic literature in all its forms – from supporting leading luminaries to inspiring new talent and passionate readers."

This year, the programme released a total of sixteen books, including ‘Language in Arabic Dialogue’ by Hamda Khamis; ‘A Step into the Void’ by Nasser Al Bakr Al Zaabi; ‘The Sword in Arab Culture’ by Fatima Al Maamari; ‘Harsh Texts’ by Basima Younes; ‘Our Shared Humanity & Forgiveness’ by Dr. Yousef Al Hasan; ‘Instructions of Zayed’ by Abdul Majeed Al Marzooqi; ‘Scribbles’ by Khawla Al Kindi; ‘Fighting Unemployment’ by Sarah Ahmad; ‘WAM’ by Buthaina Ahmad Sharif; ‘Creative Hands’ by Noura Adel Al Banna; ‘Sweetest Pains’ by Atiq Al Qubaisi; ‘Majed & the Pearl’ by Mariam Sultan Al Mazrouei; ‘Essays on Mohamed Al Suwaidi’s Poems’ by Mohammad Nouraldin; ‘Palmyranians in the Broad Horizon’ by Amina Awad; ‘People’s Stories’ by Fatima Al Mazrouei; and ‘Adventure’ By Hazza Ali Abul Reesh.

Since its launch in 2015, Riwaq al Adab wal Kitab has supported the release of 40 publications in the UAE.
