NYUAD Institute Event Discusses Threats And Opportunities For Ports Of Dubai And New York

The New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Institute is hosting a special lecture titled “Strategic Issues Facing the Ports of New York and Dubai.” The public event will be held at Al Mamoura Auditorium in Abu Dhabi on January 24 at 6:30pm. The lecture is part of a Special Series of programs that the Institute is hosting both in Abu Dhabi and on NYU’s New York Campus to about the futures of the two cities.

Professor Asaf Ashar, director of the National Ports and Waterways Institute at the University of New Orleans, will be discussing the importance of a key logistical development: containerization. The introduction of steel containers used in shipping originated in the port of New York 53 years ago, and since then have undergone little change.

However the container ship and container terminal have developed rapidly with changes in both size and technology; this evolution has been clearly illustrated in the port of Dubai, which has grown dramatically in a short period of time. Professor Ashar will discuss how both the ports of New York and Dubai must assess key threats and opportunities as they look towards maintaining their positions as leaders in the shipping industry.

The lecture is part of a series of public events organized by the NYUAD Institute in an effort to provide an open forum for dialogue and exchange of ideas within the Abu Dhabi community. The NYUAD Institute was founded in 2008 as a research arm to the recently launched NYUAD campus, which will be opening its doors to its first year of accepted students in September 2010.
