Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan Discusses Emiratisation Policies With UAE Business Leaders At The Emiratisation Employers Forum 2010











The Emiratisation Employers Forum 2010 opened successfully under the patronage and in the presence of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research, who’s keynote address shared with forum participants the government’s continued commitment to Emiratisation and the need for employer leadership to drive economic success.

Ten years after the UAE government launched the Emiratisation programme, this year’s forum, organised and presented by Abu Dhabi Tawteen Council, focused on the theme: “Private Sector Emiratisation for Economic Prosperity”. The forum provides a platform for local employers from private sectors to share their Emiratisation experiences with a view to increasing employment opportunities for Emiratis. Participation affords private sector employers the opportunity to help shape public policies on Emiratisation.

The forum included speeches by H.E. Dr. Mugheer Al Khaili, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC); H.E. Mohammed Omar Abdullah, Undersecretary, Department of Economic Development (DED); and H.E. Abdullah Saeed Al Darmaki, General Manager of ADTC.

Other participants at the forum included senior government officials from Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Statistics Center – Abu Dhabi, Eastern Region Development Council and Western Region Development Council as well as leading private sector representatives from Etihad Airways, Emirates Steel Industries (ESI), Mubadala, ADNOC, NBAD and Abu Dhabi University.

Local private sector employers were all eager to hear more about the government’s Emiratisation policies and how future programmes that meet the human resource needs of private sector employers can be jointly developed. To this effect, H.E. Dr. Mugheer Al Khaili from ADEC presented the Education Council’s strategic outlook and the role of high-end vocational training, including the delivery of demand-led skills to support the Abu Dhabi 2030 Economic Vision.

H.E. Abdullah Al Darmaki shared his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities created by Emiratisation. “Today’s event aims to help private sector employers understand the government’s commitment and plans for sustainable Emiratisation. Through this forum, we invite UAE business leaders to work with us by sharing their Emiratisation experiences and thereby helping to influence future public policy developments. By working together with employers in this way we will achieve a sustainable, productive and valued Emirati workforce,” said Al Darmaki.

“By engaging with business leaders and creating a network of professionals working to advance Emiratisation, government organisations such as ADTC are given a clear picture of what specific human resource requirements each industry sector has. This allows us to create employment and bespoke career development opportunities for a wide range Emirati jobseekers, improving the productivity of the UAE’s national workforce,” Al Darmaki added.

In addition, the forum included different industry-specific workshops that were directly aimed at exploring ways in which increased Emiratisation could be achieved in each sector. The sectors have been identified as ones that will provide significant growth and opportunities for Emiratis in the next ten years. The sectors were tourism, hospitality and real estate; finance and insurance; energy and hydrocarbons; innovation and technology; and manufacturing, associated services and trade. Each workshop was delivered alongside private sector industry leaders currently operating Emiratisation programmes.

The range of issues discussed in the sector-specific workshops included government support; growth prospects for the sector; manpower requirements by grade and occupation; salary grades; skills and competency requirements; current Emiratisation experiences and initiatives; employer engagement and leadership; and employee motivation and retention.
