ECSSR Publications on 20th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair cary exclusive discounts |

The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) is to participate in the 20th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, due to be held under the auspices of H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, on March 2-7, 2010, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. To mark the occasion, the ECSSR will offer exclusive discounts on all of its 686 Arabic and English publications. Among the more recent ECSSR releases is Nuclear Energy in the Gulf, which identifies the motives behind the development of peaceful nuclear energy programs in the Gulf states as well as the local and regional implications of such programs, and examines the role of nuclear energy in the context of Gulf energy security and climate change. The inherent risks and opportunities of managing nuclear power are also explored, through a discussion of security infrastructure, non-proliferation standards and the role of international cooperation in the field of nuclear technology and long-term development. Another recent ECSSR release is The Arabian Gulf: Between Conservatism and Change, which tackles the many controversial and contradictory issues that have emerged within the Gulf countries between traditional and modernist approaches to political, economic, social, cultural and educational change. The book stresses the necessity of reform and modernization in the Gulf states, especially in light of the substantial gap that remains between the current realities in the Gulf countries and the aspirations of their societies to consolidate political development; adopt popular participation and elements of democracy; combat the weaknesses of their developmental models and economic structures; develop their education systems; reinforce their social structures; enhance their cultural dynamism; and empower women in public life. Mohammed Al-Sowafi, Director of the ECSSR Publications Department, noted that the Center’s annual participation at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair - which stretches back to the early years of its organization - stemmed both from the ECSSR’s desire to contribute to the success of this annual event, and its interest in establishing direct, mutually-beneficial contact with intellectuals, researchers and readers. The book fair, he added, is a worthwhile annual event that brings writers and readers together, emphasizes the value of reading, and comprises a major contribution to the cultural enrichment of UAE society. In recognition of the ECSSR’s achievements, the Center received the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Publishing and Distribution in 2008, which commended its role in developing Arab thought and knowledge, promoting the publishing industry, enriching Arab libraries with academic publications, adhering to intellectual property rights, and managing effective distribution networks. |
