UAE Hosts Expert Meeting On Weather Research

UAE will host a meeting of experts on weather modification research in Abu Dhabi from 22 to 24 March 2010, highlighting the role of research in weather and climate.

As the World Meteorological Day falls on the 23rd of March, 188 countries will celebrate the 60th anniversary of cooperation in sharing information related to weather, climate, water and the environment through the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

"On behalf of the United Arab Emirates, we are proud to host a meeting of experts on weather modification research in Abu Dhabi from 22 to 24 March 2010, highlighting the role of research in weather and climate" said Abdullah Ahmed Al Mandoos, the Executive Director of the National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) and Permanent Representative for UAE to the WMO, headquartered in Geneva Switzerland.

In this world of increasing population and technological development, there has never been a greater need for research on weather and climate to enhance our ability to adjust national and international decision-making directed at reducing risk to the developing economy and society.

The impact of severe weather and climate events such as droughts, typhoons and sand and dust storms on society can be reduced greatly if accurate weather and climate forecasts are available. The availability of water from rainfall is of great interest to a large fraction of the world’s population and particular those living in the Gulf region.

A group of leading scientists from Europe, Russia, Japan, China, Africa, Australia and North America are meeting in Abu Dhabi this week with UAE scientists to provide guidance and advice on atmospheric research related to clouds and severe weather events that deliver rain to a region.

The UAE has in the past been very active in promoting research through an international prize for Weather Modification Research. "Now, it is time that we contribute to the national and international understanding of the impact of humans advertently and inadvertently on rainfall", said Mandoos.

The group of experts meeting this week is just one example of the many contributions that UAE makes to global weather and climate activities through the national meteorological observations network and weather forecast system.

Since 1950, when the World Meteorological Organization was created by the United Nations from the International Meteorological Organization that was formed in the late 19th century, it has been active in assisting countries to exchange weather and climate information and conducting international research that is the basis knowledge for decision-making in a changing world. Today it celebrates its sixtieth birthday. May it continue to thrive through national cooperation.
