Abu Dhabi International Airport To Participate In WWF’s Earth Hour 2010

Second runway lighting to be switched off for one hour

ADAC is proud to announce that Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA), in continued support of sustainability and environmental initiatives, is joining the Earth Hour 2010 drive on Saturday, the 27th of March 2010, by switching off the lighting system of its second runway.

ADAC confirmed that the airport, as a whole, remains open and fully operational; however, the lighting of the second runway will be turned off for one hour, between 20:30-21:30, as a signal from ADAC to demonstrate its commitment towards a sustainable green future. In addition to the closure of the second runway, ADAC management will either dim or completely switch off non-essential lighting in the terminal buildings, management offices, and other selected airport locations.

“We are pleased to be taking part in such an important global initiative and hope our passengers enjoy celebrating it with us,” said Ahmad Al Haddabi, SVP – Airports Operations, ADAC.

ADAC views this as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of energy conservation and minimizing negative impacts on the environment, and will therefore be making public announcements throughout the terminal buildings to communicate key messages to our customers, in addition to an internal communication campaign to raise awareness within our organisation.

All inbound and outbound flights scheduled during Earth Hour will use the airport’s other runway; the reduction of lighting at the selected facilities will be done in accordance and full compliance with international aviation standards, and will have no impact on the operation.
