NBAD Global Financial Workshop Coincides With Surge In Market Activity

The National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) begins its Second Global Financial Markets Workshop (GFMW) at a time of substantial pick-up in bond issuance, making the event especially relevant.

The four-day GFMW will begin tomorrow with a presentation titled Global Outlook and Implications, delivered by NBAD’s Chief Economist, Dr. Giyas Gokkent.

More than 190 of NBAD’s investors and partners are attending GFMW, which will continue on April 7, 8 and 12 with more presentations, panel discussions and workshops on important financial topics of the day. The event is organised by NBAD’s Financial Markets Division in partnership with corporate partners Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg.

"National Bank of Abu Dhabi strives to deliver the best value to our esteemed customers, clients and partners. In this pursuit we go beyond offering quality products and services; we produce innovative means and methods to enhance their experience with us. Offering educational programmes is one way to achieve this objective," said Michael Tomalin, the Group Chief Executive at NBAD.

Following a highly successful event last year, which was attended by 70 delegates, NBAD expanded the scope of GFMW to cover a broader range of investors, issuers and discussion and added a workshop on Islamic financial institutions. As a result, the number of participants increased substantially this year.

Furthermore, the recent surge in bond issuance by GCC-based companies, including deals from NBAD, Banque Saudi Fransi, and government of Bahrain, would provide a great backdrop to discuss and learn about the important topics in today’s ever evolving and challenging financial environment and enhance NBAD’s clients’ collective skills.

"This year’s event has attracted a very high calibre of attendees and panelists due to the fact that there is a substantial level of interest in the GCC region from institutional investors," said Chavan Bhogaita, the head of credit research at NBAD. "Indeed the very positive response that we have seen from investors for the recent bond issues originated from this region, resulting in the deals being heavily oversubscribed, clearly demonstrates that level of real demand that exists for the right investment opportunities in the GCC. Furthermore, to have industry experts, issuers, and investors all in the same room together provides a great opportunity in terms of discussion and networking." NBAD has set up three simulated dealing rooms with a capacity of 110 delegates per day to allow delegates to gain experience of the latest financial markets tools and analytics. Expert tuition will be provided by personnel from Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters, as well as key individuals from NBAD. Delegates will also have the opportunity to participate in panel discussions and Q’&’A sessions involving senior officials from high profile UAE entities such as Etihad, TAQA, General Holding Corporation (GHC), Mubadala, Aldar and Al Jaber Group.

"In line with NBAD’s commitment to the global financial sector sustainable development and corporate social responsibility, the key focus of the event is education, transparency and best in class practices. The technical content of the workshop and the profile of event participants provide a unique opportunity for delegates to network, better understand our regional credit markets, enhance their overall financial markets knowledge and indeed put theory into practice through our state-of-the-art simulated dealing room," said Sameh Abdulla Al Qubaisi, Head of Institutional ’&’ Corporate Coverage, NBAD’s Financial Markets Division.

Max Linnington, the Regional Head of Bloomberg MENASA, said: "We are delighted to actively participate in NBAD’s Second Global Financial Markets Workshop. Bloomberg has continued to innovate its global and local product offering during 2009 and we look forward to unveiling these unique solutions in conjunction with NBAD’s exciting program." Devin Wenig, the Chief Executive Officer of Thomson Reuters Markets said, "As the leaders in providing information to the financial markets, Thomson Reuters is excited to partner with NBAD, the leading bank in the UAE, in this prestigious event. The participants in this year’s GFMW will benefit from our global expertise in news and information for financial markets as well as Islamic finance."
