ALHOSN’s Society Of Women In Engineering Explores Vital Role Of Women Engineers In Construction At MEED Summit

Representatives from ALHOSN University’s Society of Women in Engineering (SOWIE) gained valuable insights on their potential contributions to construction projects across the region during their participation in the Arabian World Construction Summit (AWACS) which took place from May 24 to May 26, 2010 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. The support of Fatima Obeid Al Jaber, COO of Al Jaber Group and President of SOWIE, granted the participation of the ALHOSN female faculty and students in the event.

Organized by the Middle East Economic Digest (MEED, the Summit is recognized as the region’s leading annual construction event. The 2010 edition focused on the key growth areas of Abu Dhabi, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Around 50 industry leaders and more than 400 delegates attended the summit and its three days of open debates on the latest industry issues and trends, over 22 hours of direct networking opportunities, and two post-summit master classes.

The summit program included three main themes: strategies to beat the slowdown, the new realities of funding and financing projects, and winning new work. ALHOSN’s female engineering students and faculty joined SOWIE’s exhibition booth throughout the event to gain exposure to the mentioned themes; reinforce ties between academia and the engineering industry; and network with key industry figures.

“AWACS 2010 is an excellent platform for ALHOSN to emphasize its support for female participation in the engineering field as well as its commitment to expose its students to major industry forums. We would like to thank Mrs. Al Jaber for facilitating the involvement of our students in the summit and commend her for her valuable contributions to women empowerment. We look forward to discussing issues related to the summit with our students,” said Dr. Reem Sabouni, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, ALHOSN University, & Vice President of SOWIE.

The Society of Women in Engineering (SOWIE) was established in 2009 to provide a forum for women engineers, scientists and technologists in the UAE and across region to collaborate and share expertise in organizing various programs that empower women to excel in their respective fields. The Society was one of the key initiatives conceptualized during the UAE’s ‘First Annual Women in Engineering Event’ held at the ALHOSN University Female Campus.

ALHOSN University opened in 2005 to students of all nationalities. It offers 11 undergraduate and 7 graduate programs in three faculties accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The University has been encouraging women to enroll in engineering and other technical courses and has been actively recruiting women professors.
