UAE To Sign Antarctica Treaty


15 Young Emiratis to Win a Place on 2011 Antarctica Expedition










H.H. Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Nuaimi of the ruling family of Ajman, CEO of Al Ihsan Charity, and environmental expert, and Robert Swan OBE the first person in history to walk both the North Pole and South Pole are to announce a national sustainability competition. Winners of the competition will take their place on an epic journey on the 2011 expedition to Antarctica together with future leaders from all over the world. Under the patronage of H.E. Dr Mohammed Al Kindi, former Minister of Environment and Water & UN ambassador, in partnership with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), iLearn will be giving away to future Emirati leaders a place on board this historic journey.

The announcement made during the exclusive Sustainable leadership Salon at The YAS Hotel, Abu Dhabi on 2nd June; paving way for the UAE to become the leading nation in the Arab world in sustainability, drawing awareness to the plight of our planet.

The group will also be announcing that they will be lobbying the UAE government to sign the treaty signed by 48 nations to keep the continent of Antarctica independent and for peaceful scientific research only and the last great wilderness on earth. If successful, the UAE will be the first nation in the Middle East to sign the 50-year-old historic treaty.

90% of the world’s ice is held in Antarctica and 70% of the world’s fresh water is held in Antarctica, if the next world war is going to be for water then the preservation of Antarctica is critical to the survival of us as a species.
