Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi Organizes Sustainable Lifestyles Campaign To Empower Women To Protect The Environment

Campaign organized in cooperation with the Family Development Foundation and the Emirates Wildlife Society-World Wide Fund for Nature. The Sustainable Lifestyles Campaign empowers women to take a more active role in environmental protection

The Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched an environmental awareness campaign entitled ‘Sustainable Lifestyles,’ which aims to increase women’s awareness in the latest environmental issues, and the ways they can play a more active role in protecting and sustaining the environment.

This Campaign is organized in cooperation with the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and the Emirates Wildlife Society-World Wide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF).

The campaign was launched at a workshop held at the FDF and attended by more than 50 women. The managers of the FDF’s 15 centres throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi will be trained to focus on ways to raise environmental awareness among women who are homemakers or work in their local community.

Presenting during this workshop were: H.E Mariam Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Director General at the Family Development Foundation; Ms. Rasha Al Madfai Senior programme coordinator -Environmental Education Department at EAD and Ms. Muna Al Ameri, Senior Coordinator at EWS-WWF. The event was attended by H.E Razan Al Mubarak, EAD’s Assistant Secretary General.

The workshop covered practical ways to reduce the consumption of water in a household or at the office. Attendees discussed how each individual can contribute to saving water by making minor changes in their daily life.

In addition, a short film was screened informing the audience about EAD’s Watersavers campaign, where free tiny devices are being installed into every tap in every home, school, mosque, government and commercial building in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. To highlight the importance and simplicity of these water-saving devices, the audience was treated to a live demonstration by a representative from EAD.

‘Say No to Plastic Bags’, a film about reducing the use of plastic bags, was also shown during the workshop. It highlighted the negative effects plastics bags have on the environment, and how the use of substitutes can significantly reduce long-term effects.

Working with FDF on the Sustainable Lifestyles campaign emphasizes EAD’s belief in the vital role women can play in protecting the environment. Through this campaign, women are being encouraged to cultivate positive environmental attitudes and being a role model at home, seeing them contribute significantly in supporting strong environmental values in tandem with EAD.

The campaign will kick off after the holy month of Ramadan, and will include a number of awareness programmes which will focus on women and the family’s role in protecting the environment. Rationalizing the use of water and energy, decreasing the amount of waste in the home (specifically the usage of plastic bags) etc. are just a few of the issues, which will be highlighted throughout the campaign.
