ADEC Opens Registration For Local Scholarships 2010/2011

Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) opened registration for its local higher education scholarship program for the 2010-11 academic year today. This scholarship is designed to provide graduating students with excellent academic records with financial support to pursue their university studies.

The program is open to UAE Nationals who have scored 85 percent and above on their General Secondary Certificate or its equivalent at private schools. The scholarship is aimed at attracting students interested in pursuing degrees in electronic engineering, aerospace engineering, architecture, mechanical engineering, material sciences, economics, accounting, finance and medicine. Current university students who are already majoring in these subjects, and who have completed 30 credit hours while maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA are also welcomed to apply to the program. The scholarships provide full financial support for selected students to study within the UAE at internationally-accredited institutions. In addition to university tuition, scholarship students will receive a monthly allowance.

Students are selected for the scholarship program based on a comprehensive review process in which applicants will take entry tests, and undergo interviews. Accepted students are expected to continue to achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout their university study. ADEC’s Counseling and Scholarships Department will supervise students and provide academic and career support throughout their studies.

Mrs. Mona Majed, Division Manager of Counseling and Scholarships at ADEC, said: “This scholarship illustrates ADEC’s commitment to encouraging high-achieving students to continue their educational development regardless of financial need. Three new majors, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and material sciences, have been added to the accepted list of majors this year in order to encourage students to specialize in a range of disciplines that will help them actively contribute to the social and economic growth of the UAE.”

“The UAE scholarship program is in accordance with the Abu Dhabi Higher Education Strategy which aims to create a stronger alignment between the human capital resources and labor market requirements. In order to establish ourselves as international leaders, we must have citizens who are academically-accomplished, and professionally equipped to drive economic development in both the private and public sectors of the UAE,” she added.

Students who wish to register need to log onto ADEC’s website and to fill the scholarship application form and to submit it to ADEC’s headquarters with the following documents: eight passport photographs, copy of his or her UAE ID, passport, certified copies of grade 10, 11, and 12 academic records, acceptance letter from an accredited university, in addition to a transcript for those students already registered in university who wish to join the program.

Last year 197 male and female students were selected for the scholarship program out of 345 applicants: 33 of those accepted were existing university students and 164 were high school graduates.
