Kalima Publishes "Discoveries And Opinions Of Galileo"

Kalima, the translation project of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), has published the Arabic translation of the book "Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo".

This was written by Galileo Galilei, the great Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution.

Galileo’s book consists of four works: The Starry Messenger, Letters on Sunspots, Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina, and The Assayer.

These works were beautifully translated into English by Stillman Drake, a professor of the History of Science at the University of Toronto. He omitted unnecessary parts of the texts to avoid verbosity and monotony, while still keeping the full sense of each work.

Before each of Galileo’s works, Drake gives an introduction detailing the circumstances and events that prompted Galileo to write them. Readers get a real feel for what Galileo was up against as his ideas are presented in the context of the ecclesiastical and philosophical opposition he faced.

Galileo enlightened the world through his examination of the two most important aspects of modern science, thanks to his research curricula and his honesty. He was the first important figure to defend the right to conduct research through observation and experimentation, rather than blind allegiance to both political and religious dogma in matters of science.

Galileo attacked the scientists of his time and aimed his writings at the general public. His staunch support for the Copernican heliocentric model of the universe drew a strong opposition of the Church.

Galileo’s invention of the telescope, his observation of phenomena such as comets and sunspots and his non-traditional opinions as one of the foremost philosophers of science were the main concerns in his scientific life, and were the topics of his four most important works.

This book is a great treatise on Galileo’s ideas and his tenacity in fervently defending them. His ideas and observations mark a milestone in the history of astronomy. Drake’s book venerates Galileo and his teachings.Read phonetically Galileo Galilei was born in 1564 and died in 1642. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations and support for Copernicanism.

Galileo was called the "Father of modern observational astronomy," the "Father of modern physics," the "Father of science," and "the Father of modern science." Stephen Hawking says: "Galileo, perhaps more than any other single person, was responsible for the birth of modern science." Dr. Kamal Mohammed Sayed and Dr. Fathallah Sheikh have translated Drake’s compilation into Arabic.

Born in Egypt’s Sohag, Dr. Sayed is Professor of Chemistry of Nanomaterials and Surfaces. He graduated from the Faculty of Science in Sohag and received both Master’s degree (1988) and Ph.D. (1994) from the University of Glasgow. He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom and a scientific referee in numerous specialized scientific journals. He worked in the Faculty of Science at the UAE University from 1998 to 2005, and is currently Director of the Centre for Sohag University Open Education.

Dr. Fathallah Sheikh is Professor of Physical Chemistry at Sohag University. He has translated many books and scientific articles for the Supreme Council for Culture, Al Ain Publishing House in Egypt, the World of Knowledge in Kuwait, the Arab House in Libya and the Arab Organization for Translation in Beirut.
