The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre has organised a workshop on "Islamic Architecture and its Manifestations within the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (SZGM)" at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi entitled.

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Khalil Al Sheikh, an expert on comparative cultures at Yarmouk University in Jordan. It was attended by Dr Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre; Talal Al Mazrouei, Director of Events and Activities at the Centre, who also presented the workshop; staff from the Centre; and a number of others concerned with cultural issues.

In his speech at the opening of the workshop, Talal Al Mazrouei said that the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, since it was opened to worshipers and visitors in 2007, has become one of the most prominent religious architectural monuments in the world.

"This great edifice reflects the beauty of Islamic architecture and enjoys a prominent position in Abu Dhabi. Its beauty is evident in its captivating and inspiring features. It has a deep spiritual philosophy that expresses the message of the Mosque, its objectives and its role in the lives of individuals and society. It also encourages positive aspirations towards others in a world that demands communication, love and tolerance between us all," he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Khalil Al Sheikh addressed a number of key issues relating to the terminology used when referring to mosques and examining their place in Islam. He reflected on such terms as "Houses of God" and "Houses of the Merciful", alongside various other linguistic references.
