In Its 20th Meeting DSCE Discusses The Strategy Of Reducing CO2 Emissions

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy for Dubai (DSCE) has chaired the 20th meeting held at the Council’s headquarters at Dubai Petroleum Establishment. The meeting was attended by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Council, Ahmed Butti Al Muhairabi, Secretary General of the Council, and other members of the Council. The meeting discussed matters related to energy and gas efficiency, energy sustainability, Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, energy conservation, demand-side management, renewable energy, and water quality standards.

"In support of Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, the Supreme Council of Energy has reviewed the roadmap of the Dubai Integrated Gas Strategy 2030 regarding the policy on strategic gas reserves. Also, there were discussions on the latest developments in the field of energy consumption and conservation. The members were briefed about the energy executive plan in Dubai for the next three years, as the Council seeks to achieve the initiative of energy demand-management to reach a demand reduction of 30% by 2030 and subsequently make a great reduction in carbon emissions," said Al Tayer, following the meeting.

"The members have also discussed Dubai’s strategy for reducing CO2 and moderating climate change, setting control systems, auditing and reporting. The Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence has set a general framework for observation and auditing and preparing for reports on emissions, which will enable concerned authorities to draw a baseline of the existing level of emissions. Also, the DCCE is working on clean development mechanisms and best practices in the field of reducing carbon emissions in the Emirate of Dubai. The DCCE’s initiative will be the first of its kind in the region. It will be electronically performed and will enable the government to control and regulate daily emission levels while monitoring changes in the coming years," said Al Tayer.

During the meeting, the members tackled measures taken by Dubai Supply Authority (DUSUP) under the initiative of the DSCE to reduce energy consumption. DUSUP has taken measures to enhance consumption efficiency of house appliances, including lighting, air conditioning and renewable energy. This led to savings and other improvements in the efficiency and storage of fuel transmission and storage.

Moreover, the meeting focused on the DSCE and the DCCE’s participation in the UAE’s delegation to the "˜Conference of the Parties’ (COP18) at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held recently. The UAE effectively and actively participated in this conference by hosting a prominent pavilion at the Qatar Sustainability Exhibition, which emphasized the UAE’s achievements in the fields of renewable energy and sustainable development.
