Etisalat, the UAE’s leading telecom provider, will join major companies around the world on 29 March, 2014 in marking Earth Hour.

The company will switch off the lights at 10 buildings from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Etisalat’s buildings and facilities in all seven emirates will be darkened through the evening as special care is taken to ensure all non-essential lighting and electronics are turned off.

Commenting on the announcement, Ahmed Al Hashmi, Senior Vice President Brand and Communication, Etisalat UAE said:"Earth Hour unifies people nationwide to express their concern over the global crisis of climate change and we are delighted to be taking part.We support a wide range of green initiatives and our participation forms part of our social responsibility strategy, of which the environment is a main pillar.

"We are making wide investments in technologies and infrastructure to ensure our future is both successful and sustainable. We hope that all residents in the UAE will take this time to consider their personal impact on the environment and on how they can change their lifestyle for the benefit of theplanet."

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Etisalat earlier initiated the Go Green programme to reduce the impact of ICT operations and services on GHG emissions and other environmental effects. More recently, the telecom major pioneered several advanced green technologies including Emirates Energy Star (EES) which have directly impacted the UAE’s carbon footprint by reducing C02 emissions.

Other environmentally friendly practices included substituting traditional paper bills with electronic bills via its eBilling initiative.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement that calls on people to turn off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. The initiative seeks to raise awareness about climate change and encourage residents, business leaders and government officials to take action and start planning a reduction in CO2 emissions.
