Cooperation between Suqia and DEWA to find best solutions in the field of water desalination

The project includes the development of a solar reverse osmosis desalination plant with a capacity of 50 m3 / day

As part of UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia)’s efforts, under the umbrella of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, to find innovative and effective solutions to serve areas suffering from drought and clean water scarcity and to highlight the role of renewable energy in providing safe water for the needy people around the world, Suqia announced its cooperation with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to complete the development of a reverse osmosis water desalination plant using solar PV with a capacity of 50 m3 / day, with 7 hours of power storage at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar project in the world.

The project, which reflects Suqia’s efforts in research and development to find sustainable and innovative solutions to the scarcity of clean water, relies on a hybrid energy system combining photovoltaic cells (100 kW) and power storage system (batteries) with a capacity of 520 kWh.

“In line with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to support innovation and humanitarian action worldwide, and his directives to strengthen the UAE's role in the continuous launch of initiatives and humanitarian assistance to improve the living conditions of poor societies, this cooperation, between Suqia and DEWA, is keen to raise awareness on the importance of finding sustainable and effective solutions to serve the drought-stricken areas and to highlight the role of renewable energy in achieving sustainable development. This is part of Suqia’s commitment towards strengthening the global role of our leadership in addressing the challenges facing humanity, and providing support and humanitarian assistance throughout the world, in line with the 2030 agenda of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the UAE Water Aid Foundation and MD & CEO of DEWA.

Furthermore, DEWA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Khalifa University, to engage university students in this joint venture and to refine their skills in developing research projects in the field of clean energy and sustainability. Students will benefit from the scientific research programmes, which will be developed by DEWA and Khalifa University. The two parties will cooperate in organising conferences, workshops, competitions, and related exhibitions, in addition to designing innovative training courses, as well as studying students’ projects and developing them.

Students and faculty members at Khalifa University conducted two field visits to the solar park to study the work of the station and discuss several joint projects proposed by the university, which DEWA intends to examine the feasibility of implementing, and developing a joint implementation plan.

It is worth mentioning that this is the second joint project between Suqia and DEWA. Both parties had previously cooperated in the project of reverse osmosis desalination plant and solar photovoltaic with a capacity of 7.7 cubic meters per day.
