Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented the Global Teacher Prize to Maggie MacDonnell on the final day of the Varkey Foundation Global Education and Skills Forum at the Atlantis, The Palm hotel. Crown Prince of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum attended the ceremony. The Canadian teacher has been awarded US$1 million for her role in improving school attendance rates and girls’ registration at the school, located in the Inuit region of Nunavik.
Chairman of Mohammed bin Rashid Foundation His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of State for Youth Shamma bint Suhail bin Faris Al Mazrui, Director General of Dubai Protocol Department Khalifa Saeed Sulaiman, Chairman of Varkey Foundation Sunny Varkey, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova and a host of education leaders attended the ceremony.
Sheikh Mohammed congratulated Ms. MacDonnell and praised Varkey Foundation’s efforts in the education development field.
In a televised speech, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Ms. MacDonnell, considering her winning a win and source of pride for her country. Trudeau also thanked Sheikh Mohammed for his support for education and for hosting such event.
