Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate's dedicated entity for culture, arts and heritage, has commissioned two UAE based artists to design the stand for its participation at Art Dubai 2017. The international art fair will take place at Madinat Jumeirah and run from 15th to 18th March during Dubai Art Season, a citywide showcase of artistic and cultural events that is held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of Dubai Culture.
Dubai Culture has enjoyed a longstanding and fruitful partnership with Art Dubai, which is now into its eleventh successful edition. The Authority’s participation in the fair reflects its mandate to nurture emerging local talent and preserve Emirati heritage, and will see collaborative artists Latifa Saeed and Talin Hazbar design its stand, which visitors will find located in Johara Foyer – the main hall of Art Dubai.
Moza Suwaidan, Director of Projects & Events at Dubai Culture, commented: “We are proud of our partnership with Art Dubai, as together we further Dubai Culture’s mandate of establishing Dubai as a global centre for creativity, and enhancing the city’s cultural identity in order to drive the creative economy. We are also delighted to be working with promising artists Latifa Saeed and Talin Hazbar. By nurturing their talent, we aim to empower a new creative generation to become key movers in achieving the Dubai Plan 2021 of making this a city of happy and empowered people. Inspiring and enabling young talent is of particular importance in the UAE’s Year of Giving 2017, and in Dubai Culture’s bid to spread positivity and happiness among all members of society.”
Latifa Saeed is an Emirati multidisciplinary conceptual artist and designer, who revives traditional techniques in a contemporary context to explore nostalgic elements and heritage preservation. Talin Hazbar is a Syrian UAE-based designer, whose work focuses on organic structures, temporality, and designing within natural systems. Latifa Saeed and Talin Hazbar have been collaborating on several design installations which explore the regional craft of terracotta wheel-throwing process.
Celebrating the duo’s trademark use of traditional materials as a modern medium, Dubai Culture’s stand will feature an instillation that is inspired by Emirati heritage, recalling traditional materials and craft.
Latifa and Talin will use clay "terracotta" as the main material for the design installation at Art Dubai. In addition to their role at Art Dubai, the two artists will contribute to the new ‘SIKKA Around the City’ initiative to be debuted at SIKKA Art Fair 2017, Dubai Art Season’s flagship initiative.
Dubai Art Season is an annual umbrella event on the Dubai cultural and creative calendar, which for the fourth year will bring the city to life with activations of art in public spaces, outdoor art projects, interactive initiatives, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions, and performances held across Dubai to highlight the Emirate’s fast-growing creative landscape. The celebrated Art Dubai event coincides with other Dubai Art Season highlights including Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, Design Days Dubai, and the Middle East Film and Comic Convention, among hundreds of initiatives.
The two-month Dubai Art Season is a definitive initiative that aims to highlight the city's global credentials on the arts scene, bringing together artists from around the world for an unmatched celebration of talent, creativity, innovation and cultural diversity.
