Dubai Customs gears up to launch ’Knowledge Assets Registration Project’

Dubai Customs has finalized preparations for the launch of its Knowledge Assets Registration Project. The ultimate goal is to identify, capture and manage these knowledge assets while protecting the organization’s intellectual property rights for all of its inventions and creations.

The protection of intellectual property is a crucial catalyst for promoting creativity and innovation in any corporate. Dubai Customs is committed to ensuring the rights of its innovators and creative teams and enabling them to prosecute and bring legal action against any infringements of such rights.

Yousef Ozair Mubarak, Director of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Department of Dubai Customs, commented: “IPR Department has completed the preliminary phase of the Knowledge Assets Registration Project, which included devising of relevant methodologies, policies and procedures as well as training of IPR staff on the process of registering knowledge assets. These intellectual property assets are globally classified into two main categories: Industrial property which includes patents for inventions, trademarks and industrial designs, and copyright which covers literary, scientific, artistic, media and publishing works.

“Dubai Customs has introduced a series of innovations that are internationally recognized as significantly contributing to customs development worldwide, including Mirsal, Risk Engine, Advanced Container Scanning System, Smart Customs System for Luggage Inspection, and Smart Government Services,” said Ozair.

An internal awareness campaign is being conducted to introduce DC employees and business units to the project and educate everyone on the importance of knowledge assets registration and how it works. “We coordinate efforts with all internal stakeholders to make sure the best practices are applied in information gathering, documentation and completion of relevant applications for registration of our knowledge assets with the relevant body – the Ministry of Economy. This is to ensure that all of Dubai Customs’ innovations have registered patents that could officially protect our intellectual property,” he explained.
