NBAD Launches Jauan Al Dhaheri Scholarship With INSEAD

The National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) has teamed up with INSEAD, the leading international business school, to allow one NBAD staff member the opportunity to study towards achieving INSEAD’s prestigious Global Executive MBA, each year. The 15-month Executive Programme is offered between Abu Dhabi, Singapore, and France.

Named after the late Dr. Jauan Salem Al Dhaheri, who was NBAD’s Deputy Chairman, the scholarship is part of NBAD’s Emiratisation strategy aiming to attract, retain, and develop the best qualified UAE nationals.

“The financial industry is a highly competitive market. In order for us to continue to achieve the NBAD’s success story, we must invest in our human capital and empower them with education that is appropriate for today’s global market and contribute in shaping NBAD’s future to be recognised as the World’s Best Arab Bank,” said Ehab Hassan, Senior Managing Director and Group Chief Human Resources Officer of NBAD. “We already offer a range of executive education through the NBAD Academy and we have a long standing partnership with INSEAD. The addition of this scholarship for the Global Executive MBA will help to enhance the range available to key talent within the bank and further supports our commitment to Emiratisation”.

“Dr. Jauan Al Dhaheri was known for his extensive financial and banking knowledge, and his absence is a huge loss for NBAD. This scholarship is a tribute to the memory of the late Dr. Jauan, who played a big role in the development of UAE economy and driving the bank to success. He was an example of self-development, leadership and commitment,” said Mr. Hassan.

“INSEAD is committed to offering a complete global perspective when it comes to education. We look forward to welcoming future successful candidates to our programme. Through this endeavour, NBAD is demonstrating its leadership in investing in the professional development of its employees. We at INSEAD are also honoured to be the chosen educational institution for this scholarship and it is a great privilege to be associated with the late Dr. Jauan Al Dhaheri, a business-leader who contributed a great deal in his career to the development of the UAE Banking sector,” said Prof. Miguel Lobo, Director of Abu Dhabi campus and Associate Professor of Decision Sciences.

Under the scholarship, every year one high potential UAE national from NBAD will be selected according to competitive selection criteria both within the Bank and INSEADs own rigorous selection process. They will also have to commit to significant study obligations in addition to their day job.

The late Dr. Jauan Al Dhaheri served the Bank since 1982 as NBAD Director. He was also the Deputy Chairman, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Member of Risk Management Committee.

In addition to his services to NBAD, Dr. Al Dhaheri served several Abu Dhabi entities including Executive Council, the Supreme Petroleum Council, Abu Dhabi Department of Finance and Abu Dhabi, Department of Municipal Affairs, and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA).

The first recipient of the scholarship is Omar Al Shamsi, Vice President of MENA Institutional Sales of NBAD. Mr. Al Shamsi recently served as an ambassador on the Bank’s 2013 expedition to Antarctica, to help focus on the critical role corporate sustainability plays in business leadership.

INSEAD is one of the world’s leading and largest graduate business schools. It has three international campuses in France, Singapore and Abu Dhabi. INSEAD offers a variety of graduate programs from MBA, Executive MBA, Specialised Master’s degrees and PhD programmes. The school became the first of its kind to offer international business education with the opening of the campus in Europe in 1960. In 2000, INSEAD opened the second campus in Singapore. And in 2007 the school began an association in the Middle East, officially opening the Abu Dhabi campus in 2010.

NBAD also offers a range of Emiratisation programmes that aim to attract, retain, and develop the best qualified UAE nationals who wish to pursue a career in financial services such as:

Tomouh - an international scholarship, for young nationals interested in studying abroad, offering internship and employment upon graduation

Mustaqbali – sponsoring enrolled university students by paying a monthly allowance and offering internship and guaranteed recruitment upon graduation

Al Bedayah - geared to allow nationals to obtain an Associate Degree in Banking and Finance.

Al Sadara - which allows recruited nationals to earn a professional Diploma in Banking and Finance and gain work experience simultaneously

AFAQ – which also allows recruited nationals to earn a Masters in Finance and gain work experience simultaneously

These programmes have helped NBAD increase Emiratisation from 30% in 2008 to 37.4% in 2012, with ambitious plans for creating further employment opportunities for nationals.
