Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department (SMD); and Susanne Sporrer, Director of Goethe-Institut Gulf region (GI), honoured the participants of the Goethe-Institut training programme at a ceremony held recently in Sharjah Aquarium. The training programme, conducted in co-operation with the Goethe-Institut Gulf region and Robert Bosch Stiftung, was attended by around 150 staff members from various departments and museums of SMD. It was aimed at providing professional development training, enhancing skills and further enabling the staff members to offer the highest quality of service at the museums. “The training programme has successfully aligned the staff members with international best practices in museum management and specialised museum skills. We are delighted to announce that the partnership between SMD, GI and the Robert Bosch Stiftung will continue for another year with a new cultural manager to lead the programme and offer further training as we identify our needs for staff development,” said Manal Ataya. To lead the programme, 16 German professionals were invited to Sharjah, who conducted three- to five-day workshops that included developing skills essential to museum work, curatorial, Hands-on and education workshops. The 10 workshops focused on the fundamentals of research, documentation, curatorial work, visitor services, guiding and education. The content discussed and practiced in the workshops culminated with the opening of the “Ambassadors” exhibition, which explored the concept of museums as mirrors of a given society’s culture. Curators from SMD’s 16 museums organised, for the first time, a group show that evaluated the complex and different interpretations of social harmony as represented in the objects chosen by each curator. The exhibition was developed to mark the 33rd ICOM International Museums Day, which celebrated the theme, ‘Social Harmony’ in 2010. The joint exhibition project “Ambassadors – Curators Perspectives on Social Harmony” will be on display in the Sharjah Art Museum until September 18, 2010. |
