Sharjah City Center Makes History By Obtaining First Ever Commitment Certificate From Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign

The Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign has awarded a Commitment Certificate to Sharjah City Center - giving it the distinction of being the first ever shopping center to enjoy this honor.

The certificate is a prestigious token of appreciation for the commendable efforts made by Sharjah City Center, which included dedicating two special rooms for breastfeeding mothers.

To mark this praiseworthy accomplishment, representatives from the Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign organized a lecture, which was delivered by renowned breastfeeding consultant Muna Abdulrahman. She gave a recap of the incentives of breastfeeding for both mothers and children. She also reiterated the importance of private and public sectors’ participation, especially organizations where mothers form a considerable proportion of the workforce.

Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Director of the Executive Committee for the Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign, reacted emphatically to this latest milestone: “We are absolutely delighted by the highly supportive response from several private and government institutions. Sharjah City Center is a shining example, having devoted two rooms for breastfeeding. Undoubtedly, the participation of major shopping centers reflects positively on Sharjah’s reputation as a baby-friendly community.”

In its ongoing endeavors to enrich the Sharjah community with enlightening information, the campaign toured several government premises such as Sharjah Municipality’s Health Department, Sharjah Airport Free Zone Authority, Sharjah Media Corporation and Sharjah Museum Department. Response to the tour was overwhelmingly supportive, with many officials pledging to transform their organizations in line with the campaign’s Mother-Baby Friendly Public Places initiative.

Furthermore, the campaign organized an awareness workshop with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which was attended by prominent representatives. The lectures not only dissected the benefits of breast milk, but also gave pointers on how institutions can apply the campaign’s principles to become inspirational role models for other employers.

The campaign also organized a workshop for several nursery supervisors at the offices of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. Eman Turky, health lecturer, Khadija Al Mansouri, nutritionist, and experts Rasmiya Al Shamsi and Salam Harb discussed a wide array of topics regarding breastfeeding. These included important advice to working mothers, the vital role of nutrition for infants, the risks of promoting artificial milk and the safest ways of storing milk.

The Sharjah Baby Friendly Emirate Campaign was initiated in March 2012 under the generous patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Budoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), President of the Campaign and Honorary President of the Breastfeeding Friends Association. The campaign encompasses four initiatives: Breastfeeding-Friendly Nurseries, Mother and Baby-Friendly Public Places, Mother-Friendly Workplaces and Baby-Friendly Health Facilities. The Campaign is sponsored by Sharjah Islamic Bank.
