Ramadan Majlis Examines Criteria & Benefits Of Sharjah’s Initiative To Join World Healthy Cities Project


His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi Reiterates Support to Initiatives on Public Health










His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, supports the growth of the healthcare sector and offered his wise guidance towards establishing the Sharjah Medical District and facilitating Sharjah’s inclusion among the top World Healthy Cities.,.

The comments came during a session hosted as part of the activities of the Ramadan Majlis organised by Sharjah Media Centre under the patronage and in the presence of His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Corporation.

Hosted by His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Chairman of the Media Corporation and Osama Samra, Director of Sharjah Media Centre, the session titled as ‘Sharjah: A Healthy City’, drew the participation of His Excellency Dr. Saqr Al Mualla, Vice-Chairman of Musanada Committee, as well as Vice-President of the Executive Office and the Commission spearheading Sharjah’s inclusion in the World Healthy City programme; His Excellency Khalifa Al Shaibani, General Manager of Wekaya and His Excellency Abdul Aziz Al Muhairi, Director of the Health Regulatory Department in Sharjah Health Authority.

Participants of the Ramadan Majlis agreed that Sharjah’s advanced health care standards and practices have qualified the emirate to join the World Healthy Cities project.

In his opening speech, His Excellency Dr. Saqr Al Mualla pointed out that the World Health Organization (WHO) has launched this project to address public health. He added that United Nations delegations visited the emirate to examine Sharjah’s healthcare landscape prior to enlisting the emirate into the programme.

His Excellency Abdul Aziz Al Muhairi pointed out that the WHO has identified 80 criteria to be achieved for inclusion among the World Healthy Cities. These include among other environmental services, housing and agricultural landscapes, social development such as family and child care, security, safety and crisis management. Endorsing Sharjah’s world-class healthcare infrastructure, he said the emirate is well-positioned to comply with the project’s multiple criteria.

Commenting on the benefits of joining the World Healthy Cities project, His Excellency Al Muhairi explained that Sharjah’s participation will augment its commitment to offering world-class healthcare offerings. In addition to close the gap in the existing medical system, the initiative will enhance the confidence of the community in the emirate’s health care system.

Khalifa Al Shaibani addressed the role of Wekaya in medical waste management. He said: “Medical institutions followed irresponsible practices in the disposal of their waste with 20 per cent of medical facilities depending on public infrastructure to manage its waste. In order to save the community from serious health risks and damages, the Weqaya Executive Board passed a decision that addressed medical waste management.”

Highlighting the media’s role in raising awareness on healthcare initiatives, His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi said: “Sharjah Media Corporation and Sharjah Media Centre are working with officials from the World Healthy Cities programme to highlight the emirate’s advanced health standards. Concerted efforts among all stakeholders will benefit Sharjah. For instance, the medium radio holds a key responsibility in supporting the efforts. Hosting talk shows on healthcare will additionally serve to raise awareness. Sharjah Media Corporation and Sharjah Media Centre are keen to promote health awareness and initiatives that benefit the society at large.”

Concluding the session, Osama Samra stressed on the media’s responsibility in supporting the growth of Sharjah’s healthcare sector. He pointed out that Sharjah Media Centre under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi is keen to support activities that help achieve the developmental objectives. He expressed his gratitude to the guests for their participation, and praised their role in contributing to Sharjah’s continuous delivery of advanced health care.
