Sharjah International Book Fair Participates In Algeria International Book Fair











In line with the directives of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, a delegation from the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) is participating in the 17th edition of Algeria international Book Fair, held between 20-29 September at the Exhibition Palace in Algiers, with the participation of over 400 publishers from 35 countries.

Organized by the Algerian Ministry of Culture, the 9-day event which is held under the theme "My book ... My life", coincides with the 50th anniversary of Algeria’s independence.

Russia and Ukraine participate in the event for the first time.

The delegation includes Abdullah Al Mannai, Head of Administrative Affairs at the Department of Culture and Information, and Zaher El Sousi, Arab Exhibition Executive at SIBF. The delegation will highlight the course of the cultural, intellectual and art movement in the UAE, and promote the upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair 2012, and introduce facilities provided to publishers during their stay in the emirate of Sharjah.

The delegation members will meet with Algerian publishing houses and authors, intellectuals, writers and journalists, to showcase facilities provided by Sharjah to Arab authors, lettermen and publishers, as well as to invite them to participate in the upcoming edition of the Sharjah Book Fair, where the rich Algerian culture-one of the main sources of the Arabic culture, will be given a place of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Amri, Director of the Sharjah International Book Fair, said: “The UAE strives to enhance the role of educated Arab individuals and the Arabic book as well as to project the civilized image of Arabic culture and Arab creative people. SIBF participates in the Algeria book fair with an aim to extend bridges of communication with all parties involved in the Arabic cultural movement and throw more light on Arab writers and intellectuals.” Al Amri said: “The UAE gained a prestigious reputation as a cultural hub in the Arab world and the entire globe, and therefore it has been internationally recognised for its role in supporting culture and educated people.” He referred to the prestigious status of the Sharjah book fair- a well-reputed and major event in the Arab region- thanks to the unlimited support of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah.

“We participate in the Algeria book fair to underline the SIBF’s role and showcase facilities offered to Algerian authors and books, as well as to invite Algerian lettermen, intellectuals and writers, to participate in the upcoming edition of the Sharjah Book Fair,” Al Amri added.

The Fair will honour martyrs of writing, namely Ahmed Reda Houhou and Mouloud Feraoun, in addition to the most prominent writers, such as Rabah Belamri, Rashid Bojdrh,Yasmina Khadra and Mohamed El Saghir . The Fair features various lectures and seminars, including a seminar titled “Algerian Book: Half a century of History, in addition to other two seminars held under the titles of “Translation in Algeria”, and “The Problem of Buying Copyrights. The Algiers Book Fair will bring together authors and readers, and will showcase some books, including two books; “Henry Corriall Between Legend and History” by French Historian Ronnie Galisso, and “the Organization of Federal France for the National Liberation Front Party” (Front de Libération Nationale) by Algerian researcher Daho Djerbal. Renowned Algerian novelist Wassini Al Araj will speak about his novel Masra Ahlam Maryam al-Wadi’a (The Death of Tender Maryam’s Dreams), in addition to other writers who will be talking about their latest works and the challenges they have faced.

The Fair will also include poetry sessions, literary criticism, translation, literature and art, and cinematic, theatrical and musical shows.
