Sharjah International Book Fair Making Its Mark At Frankfurt Book Fair

SIBF looking to further expand international presence

The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) is participating in the Frankfurt Book Fair – the largest book fair in the world - being held between the 10 and 14 October 2012. SIBF’s participation in this book fair comes in line with the directives of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to promote knowledge and extend bridges of cultural communication with the outside world.

Director SIBF Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Amri, commented, “In line with SIBF’s phenomenal success as the biggest book exhibition in the Middle Eastern region, we are looking for ways to further expand its scope as a platform for meaningful exchange of knowledge. SIBF’s participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair comes in line with its strategy to further develop and expand on its services, and understand the changes taking place in book industry on a global level.”

He went on to say, “In today’s world, it is difficult to progress without communication, interaction and understanding of the cultural values of the outside world, which has become a prerequisite for the success of a nation. The Frankfurt Book Fair will also prove to be a unique platform to promote the upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair, which is to be held in November this year.”

The SIBF - as a ten-day long cultural extravaganza and book exhibition organised every year in the UAE – celebrates the written word and is attended by hundreds of publishers and more than 500,000 book-lovers from all over the world.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world’s largest book exhibition, attracting more than 7,000 international exhibitors from all over the world, along with diverse new customer groups and thousands of book-lovers. Also, more than 3,200 events are planned to take place on the sidelines of the fair. Among its many activities, the Frankfurt Academy is hosting four conferences to help international publishers find their way in the digital world, new technologies in the classroom, marketing for publishers and as well as the two-day event, StoryDrive, to highlight the potential for crossmedial cooperation.

The Sharjah Book Fair was established in 1982 under an Emiri decree issued by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and has expanded to become one of the biggest book fairs in the Middle East.

The 10-day annual Book Fair is a direct result of Sharjah’s dedication and commitment to developing and maintaining a culture of reading within the Emirate and the UAE, as is clearly encapsulated in the SIBF motto - For the love of the written word.
