Sharjah Museums Department Launches Family Amusement Day Workshops At Sharjah Maritime, Art, Archeology And Heritage Museums |

The Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) has launched a series of special educational workshops organized by SMD’s Department of Education and Interpretation as part of their regular Family Amusement Day, which is dedicated to enriching the knowledge base and cultural awareness of the community. The workshops, which target family members of various ages, were held at Sharjah Maritime Museum, Sharjah Art Museum, Sharjah Archaeology Museum, and Sharjah Heritage Museum, and aimed to enhance visitors’ technical know-how as well as their knowledge of marine science. Sharjah Maritime Museum hosted a workshop titled "Treasures from Oceans", where children and their families had the opportunity to learn about marine resources. The workshop was followed by a tour of the Museum where the children and their families were given an insight into the inner workings of traditional dhows and sailing boats, as well as the pearling trade. They learnt about the different instruments and tools that were used in collecting pearls as well as those used in fishing, including “Al-Dayeen”, a basket used to collect the pearls by the pearl divers before the discovery of oil in the UAE. Speaking about this special programme, Alya Burhaima, SMD’s Manager of the Department of Education and Interpretation, said, “Families and children have a high priority within SMD’s mandate, and this is why it has allocated a series of programmes and workshops as part of the Family Amusement Day. SMD will continue to organise such workshops through which families can connect with each other and exchange their values and knowledge so as to pass the traditions of the UAE onto the younger generation.” Sharjah Archaeology Museum hosted a workshop titled ‘Make Your Own Artwork ”.The workshop formed part of a new vision that connects the Archaeology Museum and the realm of health awareness with a focus on the nutritional elements of food that ensure ideal human health and a healthy body free of disease. The participating families got the chance to see Stone Age tools used by people to hunt for their food, as well as the remnants of shells that these groups of people used to eat to get enough Iodine, in order to ensure that built strong bones and healthy bodies. A documentary film on the Stone Age was also shown. In addition the families listened to an informative talk by Fatima Mohammad from Khalifa Hospital on how to maintain a healthy and balanced diet as well as tips on how to get a healthy body free from disease. All the participants then had the opportunity to make delicious dishes from fruit and vegetables rich in vitamins and other nutrients in a fun practical and hands on experience with the help from the Art Museum Education Specialist. Sharjah Heritage Museum provided a fun-filled tour of the museum’s celebrations section for families and their children, where they had the chance to learn more about traditional musical instruments used in UAE celebrations and folk arts. The participants learnt about how Emiratis celebrate their special occasions, such as engagement and wedding, and the various musical instruments used in these celebrations, in addition to Emirati traditional and folk arts, songs and folk dancing mostly performed by men due to the prevailing customs and traditions.
