Sharjah takes Water Festival to London

Greater efforts by public and private sectors are needed to highlight and celebrate the rich diversity of Sharjah’s calendar of world-class festivals and events which has brought international acclaim and visitors to the emirate and helped boost tourism and the economy, said HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority. This came in a presentation about the upcoming Sharjah Water Festival 2012 that Al Noman made at the ongoing World Travel Market 2012 in London.

Al Noman discussed the elaborate preparations being made by the emirate for the great fun and family entertainment extravaganza to be held from 6 to 21 December 2012 for the sixth year in a row. The UIM F1H2O Powerboat Championship, the Sharjah Grand Prix, to be held once again in the waters of Khalid Lagoon, will be the chief attraction of the festival.

“The Sharjah Water Festival has grown beyond being a routine amusement or tourism festival; it has become the highlight of the year and a grand celebration that is eagerly awaited each year by thousands of residents and foreign visitors. It has given a new meaning to popular amusement, taking family fun to a whole new level,” he emphasised.

He said that a large team of professionals from private and public sectors have been working together for months to make the festival a great success once again, bringing loads of fun and entertainment to everyone. The events like Sharjah Water Festival and the Sharjah Light Festival, which is held in February, have repeatedly proven the emirate’s capability to host world-class events, Al Noman pointed out..

As in the past, the SCTDA has been working with reputed European companies with long experience in organizing such world-class events involving international professionals and artistes to host the SWF this year. The main venue of the Water Festival remains the easily accessible Al Majaz Park overlooking the Khalid Lagoon and Buheirah Corniche. The Khalid Lagoon will witness the much awaited UIM F1H2O Powerboat Championship, the Sharjah Grand Prix, which is the highlight of the SWF, said the SCTDA Chairman.

“Events like these help us turn the focus on Sharjah, the Home of Culture and a complete holiday destination for the whole family, attracting more international visitors to the emirate and boosting the local and national economy,” he added.

Al Noman thanked His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah saying all this wouldn’t have been possible without his support and blessings. “His vision has constantly guided our success and has driven our efforts to enhance Sharjah’s profile on the world tourism map,” he said.

Sharjah has won several international awards for successfully hosting the UIM F1H2O Powerboat Championship, or Formula 1 championship as it is popularly known, in years 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007 besides an international media award in 2001.
