Abu Dhabi International Motor Show puts spotlight on advanced safety features

Leading international automobile manufacturers participating at the Abu Dhabi International Motor Show (ADIMS), held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from December 17 to 21, highlighted the advanced safety technologies and features that are today the one of the prime considerations of car buyers. Automobile manufacturers said purchase decisions are now increasingly being made based on safety factors such as number of airbags, chassis, braking and stability management systems, unlike features such as price, speed, size and interior design. ADIMS, organized by Reed Exhibition Middle East under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s Minister of Interior, has served as a platform for manufacturers and other participants such as the Ministry of Interior for showcasing the latest safety technologies. Volvo, the renowned brand for safety, has launched the world’s pioneering "City Safety", a laser-based technology that helps the driver safely navigate urban traffic by continually monitoring the areas in front of the vehicle and automatically braking to help avoid collision or mitigate its impact. "Car purchase pattern has shifted today. Buyers, who used to ask about the price, speed and interior design of cars are now comparing cars according to latest and most active safety technologies and pick the ones that provide the best options for them and families," said Mr. Andrin Afonso, Branch Sales Manager of Volvo in the UAE. Lexus has also boosted the safety and security features significantly. All cars under its brand come with Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) as one system including ABS (anti lock braking system), VSC (vehicle stability control), TRC (traction control), EBD (electric brake-force distribution), and BA (brake assist), in addition to strengthening other features such as multiple airbags, adaptive cruise control, and pre-crash safety system, with the aim of bringing yet the best possible means to protect cars. According to Mr. Emil Khniesser, Training Manager at Nissan Middle East, the company invests considerably in training the company’s salesforce to highlight safety features. "Nissan looks at safety in its totality with regards to drivers and passengers. Safety is of three stages: First is the information of data such as road sighting and making adaptive lights, meters and tyre pressure systems as accessible as possible for drivers; second is control safety which includes the latest and most active systems such as EBD, ABS, TCS, as well the power of the drivetrain, which is very important in response to accidents. Third is the impact safety which includes airbags, seatbelt, pre-crash system, and active headrest." The airbags produced by Nissan are embedded in the seat rather than the door, providing the driver and passenger with a greater deal of protection as it moves with them, while the active head rest will draw the driver backwards during sudden braking. Jeep is also highlighting the safety features for its stand visitors. "We are investing heavily in safety technologies with the aim of bringing best benefits to customers. Our cars have stiffer chassis with steel pipelines in all doors. Airbags have been doubled in some models, while the front panel can monitor the air pressure inside tyres. Besides, all cars come with front and rear sensors, helping drivers to avoid crash," said, Salim Chami, Sales Manager at Jeep. Highlighting that GMC has been recognised world-wide for the safety features of its cars, Mr. Abdulla Saba, Sales Manager at Bin Hamoodah Auto, the UAE’s dealer for GMC, said, "GMC takes consideration safety first as one of its guiding principles, looking always to bring the latest and most advanced safety features in all models, whether for family, off-road, or city drive. It’s important to boost the culture of positive safety which helps avoid accidents by having best of breed systems such as ABS, seatbelt and brakes working tighter, and better sighting capabilities in all directions, conditions and times." Some other brands have showcased the models that provide drivers and passengers with the utmost degree of safety and protection. Renault is showcasing five of models that have won international recognition for crash test. Other participants at the show are also highlighting how they can help people avoid accidents by careful and responsible driving, while investing heavily on the latest technologies with the aim of quicker and more active response to accident thus saving lives. The Ministry of Interior is showcasing two revolutionary systems that help deals with accident quickly and professionally - Command and Control System (C&CS) and Accident Sketching Systems. C&CS allows shorter response time during accident and all that the driver has to do is to give the nearest landmark such as a band, a coffee shop near him in Abu Dhabi where the operation center will check it by satellite photo and send the nearest patrol to it. ASC operates through a tablet PC or IXPLORE and replaces all paper work with automated ones, saving time and effort while ensuring that accidents are archived; detailed information is provided about the accident and accurate statistics about the number of accidents and the place where it occurred are provided. ADIMS concludes on December 21 at ADNEC and has attracted more than 40,000 visitors with 30 global auto manufacturers showcasing several new models.
