Career Guidance Counselling Conducts Awareness Evening In Abu Dhabi

Evening promotes the career guidance counselling project and introduces "life skills" to parents

The Emiritization initiative, Tawteen, has conducted an awareness evening at Shangri-La to Al Ruwad school in Bani Yas, Abu Dhabi to promote its new Career Guidance Counselling project. The evening, which comes after awareness evenings in Al Muwaheb School in Abu Dhabi and Al Dahma school in Al Ain, served to open communication channels with the local community, namely the parents of students, to learn about their suggestions and questions around the CGC project, and to spread awareness about career opportunities in the private sector. The turnout of the three awareness evenings proved to be a success as Al Muhabed had an audience of 60, Al Dahma welcomed 87 guests, while Al Ruwad welcomed 40. The audience was made up of students, parents, visitors, school staff and Tawteen staff. Sultan Al Owais of DLA piper said: "Emiratis proved themselves in the UAE and now it is time to show our capabilities and prove ourselves internationally, and that can happen through Private Sector employment." Launched in 2007 as an initiative of the Emirates foundation, Tawteen helps young Emiratis unlock their potential and build career pathways to private sector employment. In developing the Career Guidance Counselling project, which has been designed to prepare tenth grade Emirati students for the demands of private sector employment, Tawteen has worked closely with a number of partners to develop the project; Rolls-Royce, Mubadala, GEMS Education and with the support and collaboration Abu Dhabi Educational Council. Following its initial start in Al Dahma School in September 2008, the project was then piloted in two additional secondary schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi - Al Mawaheb on Abu Dhabi Island and Al Ruwaad in Bani Yas. The project which extends over 23 weeks, including a work experience component, will provide students with the tools and knowledge for making informed career decisions. It is based on proven international curriculum which has been adapted and further developed for the UAE. This project demonstrates Tawteen’s commitment and engagement with families and the wider community by inviting students and parents to join all three school’s staff to learn more about the programme and provide the essential ‘first step’ skills for students to make informed career decisions. The evening saw the introduction of the programmes ‘Life Skill Curriculum’ and overall Career Guidance Counseling project objectives and components. During the pilot phase of the course, it was estimated that approximately 120 tenth grade students would have successfully completed the programme and would then have the opportunity to participate in a one week’s work-experience in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Talking on the importance of holding the awareness evening for families, Khuloud Al Nuwais, Projects Director at the Emirates Foundation said: “We are here today to promote a project that forms the initial step in the pathway to future employment. We will provide the students with additional support the right skills and training to make the best informed decisions for their future”. Commenting on the expectations of the programme, Mohammed Khalifa Al Megbali a student from Al DahmaSchool, said: “the Career Guidance Counselling project encouraged us to start and think on what do I want to be in future ”.
