SCCI Honours Winners Of Sharjah Economic Excellence Award 2008


Event part of efforts to support private sector and promote its role in achieving sustainable development in the UAE










Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Salem Al Qassimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, attended a special ceremony to honour the winners of Sharjah Economic Excellence Award 2008. The ceremony was held at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) headquarters and was attended by Their Excellencies the presidents and members of Sharjah Consultative Council; Chairman of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry; the SCCI Chairman and members; and senior managers of companies and institutions from various fields.

Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa, Chairman, SCCI said: “It’s our pleasure to honour the winners of the seventh edition of the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award, which continues to develop and prove its importance in encouraging and recognising the excellent performance and investment activities of the private sector in Sharjah. In conformity with the vision and the appropriate directives of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, we are committed to promote the Award’s role in setting up a competitive business environment and encouraging creativity in the business and investment communities.”

“The effects of the global financial crisis have underscored the urgent and pressing need to broaden the use and implementation of total quality and business development criteria, which aim to promote the regional and global competitiveness of the local business sector. It is our hope that the Award will ultimately become a benchmark for the private sector in terms of quality, excellence, best practices, value-added performance, productivity and sustainability,” added Al Midfa.

Under the directions of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the SCCI has sought to enhance investment opportunities and strengthen the business community by launching an information campaign to educate the private sector about the promising opportunities being offered by the Award, particularly in terms of helping business enterprises enhance their performance and improve their services according to high-level standards of excellence.

Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi for their support in developing Sharjah’s industrial base. Sharjah Economic Excellence Award is one of the leading initiatives aimed at improving productivity; promoting competitiveness, reducing costs, enhancing quality and creating awareness about corporate and social responsibility. This will definitely support the business community in the emirate and create a suitable investment environment in various fields,” said Lalu Samuel, General Manager, Clipsal Middle East.

“This award reflects Sharjah’s continuous focus on encouraging creativity, innovation and quality among companies based in the emirate, and the criteria specified for this award gives a chance to participating companies to highlight their strengths in their organisational structure and administration system. The Sharjah Economic Excellence Award is one of the most prominent awards in the UAE’s business and economic sectors, and is among the most prestigious awards in Sharjah. The Award has been developed in terms of its criteria, methods and evaluation mechanism. It is divided into nine categories according to the type of facility, size and the sub-sector where the candidate firm belongs, including Industrial Sector, Trade Sector, Professional Sector, Financial Sector, Tourism Sector, Youth Projects and Businesswomen Projects.

During the ceremony, the attendees listened to a presentation that highlighted the Award’s progress as well as its standards and criteria. The presentation was followed by the awarding rites led by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Salem Al Qassimi and Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa. National Cables Industry won the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award 2008 – Industrial sector category for Large Enterprises, The Sharjah Co Operative Society secured the Award in the Trade Sector category for Large Enterprises and X- Calibur International won the Trade Sector Award for SME.

In the Professional Sector, W S Atkins, Our Own English High School and Dr. Sunny Kurian Medical Centre were the honourees, while Sharjah Islamic Bank received the Financial Sector Award. Al Shamalya and Al Shadha Station were cited as the best national professional projects in the Youth Projects category, while Emirates Vision won in the same category as the best national trade projects. The Tour of the Whale Water and Pleasure Craft won the Award in the Businesswomen Projects category.

The Merit Certificates went to “International Beverage & Filling Industries” and “Sedar Decor Factory” in the Industrial Sector category for Large Enterprises and “City Properties Real Estate” and “Baby Shop LLC” in Trade Sector category for SMEs. In the Youth projects category, “Alkheyaili Advocates and Legal Consultants,” “Ahmed Mubarak Debt Collections,” “Royal House Building Cont” and “Top Speed Used Cars and Spare parts” received the Merit Certificates.

The Award promotes good corporate governance, high standards of business ethics, corporate social responsibility and eco-friendly operations. In addition, the Award helps strength the role of business organisations in promoting sustainable development through the provision of essential facilities, launch of new projects and initiatives, and motivating companies to pursue other growth plans to achieve more success in the long term.
