Sharjah Commerce And Tourism Development Authority Sponsor Ninth Biennial Festival

Sharjah is widely regarded as one of the key centres of Arab culture and education and once again this year, the emirate’s Commerce & Tourism and Development Authority (SCTDA) is sponsoring Sharjah Biennial 9, one of the most celebrated cultural events in the Arab world. Held over a month, from mid March to mid May, this artistic extravaganza began on Monday. March16, 2009 and is entitled "Still Life, Art, Ecology and the Politics of Change".

H.E Mohamed A. Al Noman, Director General of SCDTA said ’Our sponsoring of such an important international artistic event is consistent with our endeavors to support the arts and promote Sharjah. This event is important at every level, local, regional and international and this year, concentrates on art and the environment, both of which are high on the agenda of many people in the modern world.’

Al Noman also spoke of the benefit that can be derived from the convergence of the arts and tourism, especially through the medium of an international event such as this, which promotes the aesthetic nature of still life and demonstrates its ability to achieve what major international organizations and authorities can only dream of.
"Sharjah is proud of its cultural heritage and delighted to share the many examples of classic art, literature and artifacts, of which we are custodians, with the rest of the world. Arab culture is at once ancient, fascinating and timeless, and today, more than ever, has the ability to answer important questions and heal divides. But for many visitors, these biennials are just the beginning of a quest for knowledge; it is impossible to tire of such treasures and the knowledge they harbor. Events such as these are of great value and truly deserve the appreciation and attention they receive." said Al Noman.

He went on to say that this event has become one of the major artistic and cultural events in the region and for this reason many Emirati organizations have been keen to lend their support to make it a success. As a result, these biennials have gained a place on the world stage since the launch of the first Sharjah biennial in 1993, thanks in no small part also to the vision and the support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and all those who wish to see the emirate grow as a centre of cultural excellence.
