Slight upward trend shown in prices of food commodities in Abu Dhabi during last Week of Ramadan











Statistics Center - Abu Dhabi (SCAD) issued today a final analysis of its Foodstuffs Price Index for the last week of the month of Ramadan. The report came to conclude series of reports through which the center was closely monitoring daily changes in the prices of food commodities in the local market of Abu Dhabi during the month of Ramadan, and released an up-to-date follow-up of price movements.

This initiative translates the Center’s keenness to exercise transparency and adopt unbiased methodologies in monitoring food prices throughout Ramadan for the interest of the consumer and society at large, while maintaining independence in the selection of methodologies and data sources, as well as ensuring the confidentiality of information.

The report findings revealed a slight rise of 0.03% in the prices of foodstuffs during the month of Ramadan, compared to the food prices during July, 2009. And despite the fact that the rise recorded was generally very slight, it was noticeably higher for certain commodity groups as follows: pulses prices leapt by 16.5%, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionary by 15.7%, while fish and seafood increased by 2.80%.

In their turn the prices of other commodity groups declined markedly, during Ramadan. These include fruits, which dropped by 11.91%, bread and cereals by 7.64% and other food products by 8.55%.

In a comparison of prices between the last week and third week of Ramadan, the report show that food prices had inched up by 0.28%, this was caused by higher prices of goods within certain sub-groups as follows: bread and cereals prices nudged up 0.22%, fish and seafood by 1.23%, fruits by 4.77%, pulses 0.80%, coffee, tea and cocoa 0.24%, and other food products 0.20%.

Over the same period of time the prices of consumer goods under some sub-groups edged down as follows: meat by 1.72%; and milk, cheese and eggs by 0.13%, while the prices of oils and fats, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionary, mineral water, soft drinks and fruit juices of various types remained stable.

In addition, analysis of the report findings points to a rise of 0.56% in food prices during the last week of Ramadan as compared with price levels during the week preceding Ramadan, as a result of higher prices of various items within certain commodity sub-groups as follows: bread and cereals prices went up by 1.43%, fruits by 5.44%, pulses by 1.44%, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery by 1.35%, coffee, tea, cocoa by 0.14%, mineral water, soft drinks and different types of fruit juices by 0.35% and other food products by 1.44%.

Meanwhile the prices of consumer goods under the following sub-groups declined at the following percentages: meat by 1.30%, fish and seafood by 1.51%, milk, cheese and eggs by 0.34%; and oils and fats by 0.55%.
