NYU Abu Dhabi Institute Announces Its Program Of Events For Fall 2009

The New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Institute launches its second year of public programs this Fall, consisting of lectures, special topical series, and conferences in the arts, humanities, sciences, and engineering. These events have been designed to provide an open and engaging space to encourage intellectual discourse and knowledge transfer within the Abu Dhabi community.

The NYUAD Institute was founded in 2008 to serve as NYUAD’s first public forum, and it will grow to become the research arm on the new campus over the coming years. The Institute will be a key driver of NYU Abu Dhabi’s goal to become a hub for cutting-edge research in the region. In its inaugural season, the Institute explored a wide range of topics that held both regional and global appeal, including climate change, the relationships between Gulf states and African nations, and a three-day session on media, education and human development, which focused on topics including teacher development, and media and civil society.

Philip Kennedy, Faculty Director at NYUAD Institute said: “Our public programming provides a perfect forum for exploring the intersection where NYU Abu Dhabi Institute’s research and educational resources meet Abu Dhabi’s exciting agenda in the arts, humanities, sciences, and engineering. Our events also help to create a dialogue between leading scholars, many of them from NYU, and members of the Abu Dhabi community.”

The first event for the 2009/2010 academic year takes place September 29, 2009 with a special guest lecture by History professor Yasser Tabbaa speaking on the appearance of Christian religious and cultural iconography in medieval Islamic art.

The events will be held at Al Mamoura Auditorium through October, until the NYUAD downtown campus is ready to host the Institute events. Additional information and synopses for all events are available online at http://nyuad.nyu.edu/news.events
