The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) has announced the launch of the official website for the Etisalat–Sharjah Water Festival 2009: www.swf.ae. The website includes all the latest news and updates about the festival and its various activities, and forms part of the SCTDA’s ongoing efforts to provide the public with quality services and e-information on its undertakings.

The website also includes the full schedule for the Festival, which starts on 2 December and runs until the 12th of the month with the theme “Waves of Fun”. The festival includes a variety of entertainment, educational and sporting activities ranging from acrobatic diving shows to the F-1 Powerboat World Championship – Sharjah Grand Prix, hosted by the emirate of Sharjah for the 10th consecutive year, and taking place on 10–11 December.

Says H.E. Mohamed A. Al Noman, SCTDA Director General: “Every year, we make sure every aspect of the Etisalat–Sharjah Water Festival is exciting and relevant, including the activities, the events and the promotional campaign, and the new Festival website will help to keep the public updated about the latest festival news. The website offers the public and the media detailed information about the festival, and we plan to update it frequently as the festival progresses. Available information includes a general overview of the Etisalat–Sharjah Water Festival, a detailed list of activities and events, information about the F-1 Powerboat World Championship, sponsor information, a media centre, a photo gallery and a virtual trip through the festival’s numerous activities,” Al Noman added.

The Etisalat–Sharjah Water Festival takes place at Al Majaz Park, opposite Sharjah’s Khalid Lagoon, and runs from 16:00 to 22:00 Saturday to Wednesday, and 16:00 to 24:00 on UAE National Day, Thursdays and Fridays. The Festival offers a wide variety of entertainment activities for people of all ages and interests, including a daily Sesame Street Performance, acrobatic diving shows, children’s entertainment shows at Mouj Land (‘mouj’ is Arabic for ‘wave’), carnival parades featuring clowns and stilt-walkers, circus shows, bands and much more.

Various government departments and official organizations from the emirate have also stepped up with their offerings, which range from culture-focused activities presented by the Sharjah Museum Department and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to contests and children’s shows organized by the Sharjah Municipality and youth centres, to military music shows by the Sharjah Police, and specialised exhibitions and workshops for children presented by the Environmental and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) and the Arts Department.

In addition to the entertainment staples from previous years, the 2009 festival also features a performance by the I Cameristi Triestini Orchestra, directed by Maestro Fabio Nossal, on the opening day, while the Night Souk gives visitors the chance to take a stroll through the market in search of bargains, or visit the international food court.

The Festival culminates in the F-1 Powerboat World Championships – Sharjah Grand Prix 2009, held on Khalid Lagoon, an event for which the emirate won ‘Best Organizer’ in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007, as well as the World Journalism Award for the best organization in 2002.
