KALIMA Translates The Known World By Edward P. Jones

KALIMA, the translation project of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), has published the translation of the US author Edward P. Jones’s award-winning "The Known World" novel into Arabic.

The novel won several awards, including the Pulitzer, Ben Hemingway and IMPAC Dublin Literary World. The story was the subject of a large celebration in the US literary circles following its publication in 2005.

Novelist Jeffrey Lent called "The Known World" the most powerful and deeply realized novel he has read in a long time.

"Edward P. Jones has crafted a modern masterpiece, which not only tells an unforgettable story, but does so with such elegance, grace and mystery, that it, finally, staggers the imagination. This novel is what literature should, and can, be." said Lent.

Eminent critic Janet Maslin of the New York Times Book Review described the novel as a fascinating work. "Mr. Jones explores the unsettling contradictions and specifics of US slavery, especially in Virginia, with hard-won wisdom," said Maslin.

"The novel is destined for a permanent spot on the shelf of great American novels about slavery, next to Morrison and Faulkner," wrote the Boston Globe.

Novelist Peter Matthiessen called it a strong, intricate, daring book by a writer of deep compassion and uncommon gifts.

"The novel remarkably expresses irony, sadness, joy, mystery, and an acute sense of our human existence in the world," wrote Matthiessen.

Critic Jonathan Yardley called this extraordinary novel "the best new work of American fiction to cross my desk in years." The novel was translated by Nasira Al-Saadoun.
