Oil Baron’s Ball Makes Wishes Come True This Festive Season

Representatives from the Oil Baron’s Ball 2009, today presented a brand new car to a local young boy suffering from eye cancer, making his long trips for treatment from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi much quicker and easier for him and his family.

This special gift is a wish come true for 9- year-old Abdulla, who has suffered with eye cancer for many years, and has had to regularly travel to Abu Dhabi by taxi to receive treatment for his condition.

The special donation forms part of the staggering 500,000 AED, which was raised during the Oil Baron’s Ball 2009 for the Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP). The money has already made several wishes come true in the UAE with laptops, rent money, school fees and game consuls being presented to some of the charity’s young beneficiaries by the Oil Baron’s Ball organisers, Reflex Publishing, a dmg world media company.

FOCP, which became the event’s official charity in 2008, aims to provide moral, financial and practical support to cancer sufferers and their families. The charity was founded under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed AI Qasimi, President of the Family Supreme Council, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah & Federal Supreme Council Member H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi.

Eileen Michael, founder of the Oil Barons Ball and managing director of organizer Reflex Publishing said: “We are delighted to be able to make these special children’s wishes come true, and are thrilled to have raised such a large amount of money for such a worthwhile cause. We are extremely grateful to all who donated money during the Oil Baron’s Ball, and we look forward to making many more young wishes come true through the FOCP in the future.”

Dr Sawsan at FOCP, said: “This is a very generous donation from all involved with the Oil Baron’s Ball and we want to extend a huge thank you to everyone. We are also extremely grateful to Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade, for the personal appeal she made to all attendees during the event. The money will touch the lives of so many sufferers and their families and will provide us with great support to make their lives happier and more comfortable.”

This year’s Oil Baron’s Ball saw the crowning of WASP’s Charlie Sinclair as the Oil Baron of 2009 and guests dancing the night away to a Motown extravaganza, celebrating 50 years of Tamla Motown. Generous bidders helped to raise money at the silent auction, which saw prizes such as a stunning Pictanda pearl necklace, a round of golf at Emirates Golf Club, a golf lesson with celebrity instructor Claude Harmon, a Jukebox courtesy of The Jukebox Gallery and luxury holidays in a five-star villa in Thailand and Sri Lanka.

In addition to the auction, donations were made before, after and throughout the night, which raised the total to over half a million Dirhams making this year’s total the most raised to date. Some significant pledges were made on the night, including donations of AED 145,000 during the night.
